What, in your opinion, are the most powerful two words in the English language? At the end of last semester, a friend of mine said "I think the two most powerful words in the English language are.... and ....". The thing that struck my attention was that I thought he was going to say two completely different words. I then started thinking that such an "exercise" would reveal the diversity of opinions and personalities that we all have. Therefore, what do you think are the most powerful two words in the English language and why? If others participate, I'll throw my two cents in. :)

Nice replies everyone. :)

When I first heard my friend say the phrase before giving his own insight, I immediately thought of "I understand". Knowing that someone understands from personal experience sheds the belief that one is left to carry a burden alone, that something is wrong with him/her. It makes it more natural to open up and release hurts and it invites healing.

I like to make myself approachable to people by openly admitting my flaws. Doing so, I believe, helps whoever is seeking advice/wisdom/comfort from me realize that even the person who seems to have it together is in reality far from perfect in more ways than imaginable. Realizing this makes it "okay" to openly admit that they're not perfect and comforts them in knowing that it's okay to not know the answers to everything. It also, above all, lets them know that they're not the first or only person going through what they're going through (meaning there's a simple way out of what they're going through) and they certainly will not be the last.

Hebrews chapter 2 serves as proof that Jesus understands us in every way it means to be human and can help us in any way possible because He knows first hand everything it's like to be human. Understanding this fully has helped me to be more open and honest with Him.

Keep them coming, please. :)

It's very difficult to choose the most powerful words. There are so many, which could be the ones. I Do - yes - in many connections have much power. Love and hate are powerful too. But I would say "forgive and forget". When you forgive, something marvellous happens, something which has been broken becomes whole again. And when (if you can) you forget, it makes forgiveness perfect.

life and death...as in the power of the tongue!

peace and hope...as in contentment in the present, yet certain hope for the future! :D

love and faith...as in companionship and spiritual understanding to endure tough times!

gratitude and generosity...being thankful for what one been given from on High and sharing that joy with others!

selflessness and compassion...bearing the burdens of others sincerely! :prayer:

1 Corinthians 13:13

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

I think Love and Faith are the two most powerful words in the English language.

It's obvious how powerful it is telling someone you love them.

Saying 'I have faith' is also not a meagre statement.

Love and hate...both so powerful...two complete opposites that make a world of difference in a person's life. Love is something everyone wants, but the meaning has been lost by many...hate is something that breaks the world apart. Love and hate...two words that make a world of difference!

I agree, Love and Hate are two very powerful words and can build up or destroy.

But I also think that the statement 'I care' is very powerful in itself as well. So many people want others to understand them, and to listen to them. And sure, sometimes we can listen but we aren't paying any attention...the knowledge that we actually CARE for that person is so powerful and it really builds them up. If we distance ourselves from people we never truly show them that we love them. If we also distance ourselves and NOT care for them we are not being good disciples of Christ. We have been called to love and to care for everyone. So yeah. They are pretty powerful...but I probably would never be able to decide which the TWO most powerful are...there are so many, and the ones which have all been said are so true as well!!

I think all the suggestions so far have been excellent.

Truly I don't think we can say there are two words which are the most powerful at all times, in all places and situations, but these are the ones that spring to my mind as close contenders:

"Father forgive"

We can add "them" or "me" to the above as required.

God bless, Susana
