The Miracle of Jesus' Birth

I am looking at the Miracle of Jesus' birth which is recorded in Luke chapter 1, verses 36-38. You can listen to a beautiful dramatised narration of Jesus' miraculous birth, and read along as you listen, by clicking on the links at the bottom of the this post.

In verse 36 Luke wrote: "God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David."

The angel Gabriel told the virgin Mary she would conceive and give birth to a son, and he said she should call his name Jesus.

"Jesus will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end," said the Angel Gabriel.

In verse 34 we read: "How will this be," Mary asked the angel Gabriel, "since I am a virgin?"

The angel Gabriel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God."

The miracle birth of Jesus' was the fulfillment of ten bible prophecies. Read about these prophesies by clicking on the page at the bottom of this link.

Saint Luke wrote in verse 37: "For no word from God will ever fail," and Mary said to the Angel Gabriel: "I am the Lord’s servant; may your word to me be fulfilled."

Christians are inspired by our sister Mary, and like Mary, we declare: no word from God will ever fail; we are the Lord's servants; may His word be fulfilled in our lives. Amen.

Enjoy this beautiful film: Mary, Mother of Jesus; I found this film emotive and very tender indeed.

Jesus Changes Water Into Wine

I am looking at the Miracle of Jesus changing water into wine, which is recorded in John chapter 2, verses 1-11. You can listen to a beautiful dramatised narration of Jesus turning water into wine, and read along as you listen, by clicking on the links at the bottom of the this post.

Jesus, his disciples and mother attended a wedding at Cana in Galilee. All was well until the wine ran out. Mary, said Jesus: "They have no more wine."

So He asked the servants to fill six stone water jars with water, and then instructed them to take some to the master of the banquet.

In verse 9 we read: "The master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realise where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew."

Servants were privy to Jesus turning the water into wine, but the master of the banquet and others were not.

Jesus allowed servants to be beside Him as He turned the water into wine. They watched this miracle happen right before their eyes. I am reminded of St. Paul's words: "God chose things despised by the world, things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important."

I try to imagine the conversation these servants had amongst themselves and with their families and neighbours when leaving the wedding.

The Samaritan woman at the well said: "Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?"
John 4:29.

Healing of the Government Official's Son

I am looking at the Healing of the Government Official's Son which is recorded in John chapter 4, verses 43-54.

A government official's son was sick at Capernaum. When he heard Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death.

We read in verse 49 the Government Official said to Jesus:

"Sir, come down before my child dies."

Jesus said to him: "Go, your son will live."

The man took Jesus at his word and departed. He met his servants on his journey home who told him his son was alive. He asked his servants what time his son got better, and the servants said yesterday at 1 o'clock the fever left him.

The father realised that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, 'Your son will live.' So he and his whole household believed.

This was the second miracle Jesus performed after coming from Judea to Galilee.

Enjoy this beautiful film clip (2:38 mins) of Jesus healing the Government Official's Son. I don't know the name of the film from which this clip was taken, but perhaps someone will recognise it? The narrator speaks with a wonderful English accent, as do the actors. I would be interested to know who the narrator was and who played the role of Jesus.

The Healing of the Man at the Pool

I am looking at The Healing of the man at the Pool which is recorded in John chapter 5, verses 1-14.

Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. There is a pool near the sheep gate called Bethesada, where a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralysed. There was a man lying there who had been disabled for thirty-eight years.

In verse six we read: "When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, 'Do you want to get well?'"

The man desired to be healed.

Then Jesus said to him, 'Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.' At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. (v.8-9)

This was the third miracle Jesus performed.

I have a personal story to share. One day my son told me he had no feeling in the left side of his body. Several doctors examined him, and he was given a brain scan and a lumbar puncture. It was a very worrying time indeed. His paralysis lasted several days, but gradually the feeling in the left side of his body returned. The doctors believed it was caused by a virus.

Jesus Feeding The Five Thousand

Enjoy this beautiful film: Jesus feeds the five thousand
(2:29 mins).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFggyj_9Rqo

I am looking at the fourth miracle, which is the miracle of Jesus feeding the five thousand. This is recorded in Matthew chapter 14, verses 13-21.

You can listen to the actor David Suchet narrating the story of Jesus feeding the five thousand, and read along as you listen, by clicking on the links at the bottom of the this post.

Jesus had just been told the tragic news about the death of John the Baptist, and so He got in a boat to retreat to a solitary place. A large crowd of people followed Him. Jesus had compassion upon them and He healed those who were ill.

When evening came, His disciples asked Him to dismiss the crowds, so they could go and buy food from the shops. Jesus said no, you feed them. They said we can't because we only have two fish and five loaves.

Jesus took the five loaves and two fish and He raised them up to Heaven and prayed. He then asked the disciples to feed the crowd. They all ate heartily and there were twelve baskets of left overs.

Jesus Walks on Water

Enjoy this beautiful film: Jesus walks on water (3:33 mins).

I am looking at the fifth miracle, which is the miracle of Jesus walking on water. This is recorded in Matthew chapter 14, verses 22-33.

You can listen to the actor David Suchet narrating the story of Jesus walking on water, and read along as you listen, by clicking on the links at the bottom of the this post.

After feeding the five thousand people, Jesus told His disciples to get in the boat and go to the other side of the lake. Jesus then went up the mountainside to pray.

Jesus knew the boat had not yet reached the other side of the lake, so He walked across the lake to meet the boat. His disciples saw Him walking on water and they were full of fear, imagining Him to be a ghost.

Jesus told them not to be afraid and revealed to them who He was. Peter, doubting, said if it is You Lord, then ask me to come to You. Jesus bid Peter to come to Him.

So Peter climbed out of the boat and he walked on the water. Then he was afraid of the wind, and he started to fall under the water.

He cried out to Jesus: "Save me Lord!" Jesus stretched out His hand and pulled Peter up from the water. They got into the boat and the disciples said He was the Son of God and worshipped Him.

Jesus walks on water; commentary by Mark G. Vitalis
https://www.workingpreacher.org/preaching.aspx?commentary_id=985

When we keep our eyes fixed upon Jesus we are not afraid, but when our eyes look at other things, then fear can fill our hearts in the same way fear filled Peter's heart, and he began to sink into the waters, and we start to sink into our problems.

Like Peter, when we are afraid we can cry out: Jesus save me, and we can trust, He will stretch out His hand towards us. He will take our hand and lift us up. He will lead us to a safe place where we can worship Him and rest in complete assurance, knowing we are with the One who created us; our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

When I was reading the story of Peter sinking beneath the waters, I remembered Jonah who sank beneath the ocean, and the large fish swallowed him.

Jonah's Prayer
From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the Lord his God. He said:
'In my distress I called to the Lord and he answered me.
From deep in the realm of the dead I called for help, and You listened to my cry. You hurled me into the depths, into the very heart of the seas, and the currents swirled about me; all your waves and breakers swept over me. Jonah 2:1-3

This shows that Jesus does not have to see the sick.

Jesus just has to say the word and it is done.

Jesus Drives out an Impure Spirit

Jesus went down to the Synagogue in Capernaum, Galilee to teach. The congregation are amazed by His words as He speaks with authority and power.

A man rose up to disrupt the meeting; he was possessed by a demon, an unclean spirit. The demon inside the man cried aloud:

"Jesus of Nazareth, have you come here to destroy us? I know who You are; You are the holy One of God."

Jesus addresses the Demon sternly: "Be quiet and come out of him."

The demon throws the man to the ground in front of all the congregation, and then leaves the man without injuring him.

All who witnessed this were amazed and they said: "Even the demons listen and obey Jesus' commands."

This is the sixth miracle, which is the miracle of Jesus drives out an impure spirit, which is recorded in Luke chapter 4, verses 31-37.

You can listen to the actor David Suchet narrating the story of Jesus drives out an impure spirit, and read along as you listen, by clicking on the links at the bottom of the this post.

Today when we are opposed for being a Christian, we need only keep our hearts and minds fixed upon our Lord Jesus Christ and He will act on our behalf. The Holy Spirit lives in our hearts and He is our Teacher. He brings Jesus' words to our remembrance. He is the Spirit of Jesus Christ, who is the same today, as He has always been.
