It's important for us to spend time committing Bible passages to memory because by doing this we could always recall them later on for various reasons, such as using them to ward off the enemy, sharing them with others that are in need of a good word, to cross reference them with other similar passages while studying the Bible for the purpose of gaining greater insight, etc...

I think we should start off with three a week, and eventually progress to more as our ability to memorize improves. This will happen by the way. I got so good at it at one point that I was able to memorize close to ten verses in less than 20 minutes.

We can commit ourselves to doing this under an accountability system.

Why don't we take turns giving verses to memorize, and allow for a certain time period in which to do this. Upon memorizing the verse, those involved can just post within this thread that they completed the assignment. When the time period expires we can then move on to another verse.

For now, let's give each person involved 2 days to memorize each passage.

I am going to put up another thread that will serve as a sign in sheet. If you are interested in doing this just put you name in the thread.

Once we establish a memory verse group, we can then begin to memorize scripture...

Ok, now that we have our memory verse group established here is the first passage for memory:

"For though walking about in flesh, we do not war according to flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not fleshly, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds, pulling down imaginations and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought into the obedience of Christ (2Co 10:3-5 MKJV)

This passage is to serve as a reminder to us that our thoughts ought to be in union with Christ's thoughts. Moreover, when we encounter people within the church that foster the view that we shouldn't judge each other by what they believe, this passage could be used as a means of reminding them that not all views are to be tolerated by God's people. Any thought that is exalted above the knowledge of God is to be cast down, or discarded according to the words of Paul.

I would like to have a new passage posted every Saturday and Tuesday.

The next person to present a memory passage will be Djconklin, as we are following the order of names as they appear in the sign up thread. So please be sure to know who is before you. That's the easiest way to know when it's your turn to provide the group with a memory passage. So when you see that person post a memory verse/passage, you will know that it's your turn next.

Let's try to keep each memory passage to a maximum of 5 verses for now. We don't want to go too heavy into this initially. As we get more efficient at memorizing we can increase this amount.

Some tips on memorizing:

1. Use index cards. You can take them with you wherever you go, and in your spare time review your passages. I usually put the book, chapter, and verse on one side and the passage on the other so that I can look at it by itself and then recite the passage in my mind, or look at the passage and recite the book, chapter, and verse in my mind.

2. It is not a good idea to memorize from the KJV, as it is not applicable to modern-day English. It is always easier to memorize in a language that you are accustomed to speaking on a regular basis. Since we normally don't speak in old English it is better to memorize from the NKJV or the NIV.

3. When you attempt to memorize a passage, don't just memorize it to know what it says. Instead, meditate on it. Put some thought into it. Learn what it really means, and discover how it applies to your life. We tend to remember those things in the long term that are most meaningful to us.

God bless you as you allow His word to enter into the depths of your heart!

Please remember, it will be Djconklin's turn to give us a passage for memory on Tuesday.

EDIT: I made a minor adjustment. I took away verse 6 because it makes more sense for memorization to end it at verse 5.

3 verses!!!! Oh, my word! Remember, woob some of us are past the "over the hill" mark! More like the steep downhill slide side.

I found a sneaky way to help pound it in--organize the verses!

2 Corinthians 10:3-6 (ESV)
............................... For though we walk in the flesh,
........ we are not waging war according to the flesh.
For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh

but have divine power
........to destroy strongholds.
.....We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion

raised against the knowledge of God,
and take every thought captive to obey Christ,

being ready to punish every disobedience,
..............................when your obedience is complete.

Rats! It won't show up right here. I have the first 3 lines lined up so that I have a column of the word "flesh" at the end. This also means that the words "war" are practically a column as well all without the periods.

And then I put in a large print (28 point?) and printed landscaped.

All that matters is that you do your best. Even if you are only able to get the concept down it would be much better to know something of the passage than to not know anything at all about it.

Another thing that might help is to break it up. Since there are 4 verses in it, perhaps you could memorize a verse each day, building on the previous one. On Tuesday you should have it down.

But please be sure to follow the suggestions that I gave, as they are very helpful for scripture memory.

I'm thinking that after we get this thing going we could even share with others what we think is most significant about our memory passage. People from our group would then have the opportunity to discuss it up until the next one is given. This would make this project more interesting in my opinion.

Maybe we can all be watchful, and share with others how our memory passage has helped us while we were in the process of memorizing it during the time period prior to getting the next passage. We'll see.

I don't know what happened with DJ, but if he doesn't provide us with a memory verse I will. I will wait it out a little longer.

I really hope that everyone is keeping up with the program. You will be thankful for it when you see how you can use these memory verses to your own benefit, and to help others.

"But I exhort you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing and that there be no divisions among you; but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment." (1Co 1:10 MKJV)

This memory passage encourages us to be one in truth and in spirit. In other words, not only should we all agree on what is Godly truth, we should also live according to the truth as it is in Jesus.

Wonderful choice of verse, Woob. :) I haven't gotten to the book of 1 Corinthians yet.

OK, I'm sorry, I forgot about this thread's existence! OK, I will give you all one of my favourite verses to remember :)

What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?
Mark 8:36

This comes especially handy, when one is faced with temptation to break just one little itsybitsy commandment perhaps e.g. to download just one illegal song, thereby stealing. What good is it to forfeit your soul for the ENTIRE world, let alone one song..?

Out of all the verses in the Bible, what are the odds you'd chose the very first one I ever quoted? ;)

It was my first favorite verse ,and probably the only one I've ever been able to quote properly. I guess I've got a break for memorizing this one! ^_^

I just want to let you all know that I am going to back out of this project. Due to all of the harassment that I have been suffering in the SDA forum I no longer wish to have any part of it.

This place has really become a burden to me, and is not helping me in my relationship with Christ, but is only discouraging me.

If the people that have been so problematic leave this place then let me know. Maybe I will return then.

If any of you would like to keep in touch with me you can send me a PM.

God bless you!

:( So sad to hear that, Woob. Nonetheless, I can understand why you're chosing to do that..and I can respect it, even if it's with reluctance.

Hope it's only temporary.

Blessings and Love,
Sarah

Hey if you guys are looking for another way to memorize scripture. Check out www.mapawproject.com - MaPaW stands for memorize a passage a week. It has helped me so hopefully it can help you too.

I commend you for taking the time to memorize Scripture, and for encouraging others to do the same.
