  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I think the Watchowski's sprinkled their trilogy with concepts from many different religions. The Merovingian were actually a noble family that claimed to be decended from Jesus, whom they believed married Mary Magdalen.

What's even more crazy is that the same actress, Monica Bellucci, played Merv's wife in Reloaded/Revolutions and Mary Mags in the Passion.

I've gotta agree, there's a smattering of several religions - Christianity being one of them. You can also see references to Eastern faiths.

I'm not even going to enter the "argument" as to whether the Matrix Trilogy is or is not full of Christian imagery vs. other religious imagery vs. philisophical non-religious imagery....

As a Christian there is a lot in the movie to make you think and much of the imagery definitely seems to intentionally connect with Christian thought. Undeniable. My favorite?

I like the obvious big stuff (though liscense plates and cheat codes are pretty cool...I'll have to check it out). In "Reloaded" the conversation between Neo and The Oracle just before the big fight with Agent Smith(s) was probably one of the most thought-provoking contributions to the whole dilemna of Free Will vs. Predestination that I have ever heard in popular culture. Worth watching over and over again. I've used the clip in church as sermon illustration (gasp! R-Rated clip in church!).

Love the movies,

Like in the 1st movie where the druggie refers to Neo as his own personal Jesus Christ. Can we say foreshadowing?

The "real world" is not "this" world. The only way to escape is Gnosis....receive the secret knowlege and escape. With that knowlege, you can exercise control over the material world, which is just an illusion. That's Gnosticism all day long.
Yup, yup. All day long.

and with the "it was written as a trilogy" arguement, i don't think it was, wasn't it just written as just a single movie, but because it was so successful, they did sequels (unfortunately)? the rest of that stuff though is sorta freaky in a weird way...

Joel Silver, the producer or The Matrix movies and other succesful movies, says that it was always a trilogy, and claims he seen the story "outline" durning the filming of the 1st movie. I like to think that the basic outline/ideas were there from the begining. Unlike Lucas who has completely rewritten the Star Wars universe over the past 27 years.

I don't know why I haven't gotten into this thread yet, I'm known amongst my friends for spending too much time reading into the Matrix movies. I'm to tired tonight to go into details but the W. Brothers once replied with this when asked if they could tell how many hidden images/themes are in the movies "more than you'll ever know". That was before they went into hiding and refused to do interviews. But just look at the last 5 minutes of Revolutions and your hit with many religious images.
I've attached two below. I'll post more tomorrow when I'm completely awake.

I was listening to the first part, of a 2 part sermon, titled The Matrix.
They're not doing a sermon on the movie, but they took a few clips out, and it helps the pastor bring his point across. Last week he took 2 scenes from City Slickers, and gave a sermon, on the meaning of life.

Besides a few things in the movie, it really appears to be a modern Jesus saves mankind, type movie.

In the sermon, the pastor was explaining the Spiritual World. He used the "blue pill, red pill" scene to help with that.

When I watched this movie, it was during a life changing experience. God used this movie to help shape, and mold my attitude, towards the proper Christian walk.
So many Christians walk around, waiting for God, or someone to do something, like in the movie, and I was no different. Sure I did things, like witness, read, and goto church, which those are very good things, but there is more, much more.

As Christians we have our roll model, our master, the one that shows us the way, we are disciples of Christ. What are we learning from Christ? We are/should be learning how strong we really are.
People say "your going to sin, you can't help it", that is not what the bible teachs! If you can't help but sin, then God designed you wrong, and some of your sins(minimum) is God's fault, and that simply isn't true.
Morpheous was training Neo in the fight scene, and the jump program. Neo said "I know what your trying to do, and I don't like it.", Morpheous replied "I'm trying to free your mind."
And that is what one of the things Jesus is trying to teach us.The bible says the battle is in the mind.
Jesus doesn't just want us thinking properly, He wants us to change the world we live in. By doing the very same things, He did, like healings and miracles, and being a good neighbor, basicly whatever Jesus did, that is what we should be striving to be like.

That is what I got out of the serious, but the movie definitly isn't Christian. I just use the good stuff to help inspire me, and view the rest of it as just a movie.
