  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

OK, so the matrix is a movie, right? But how many of you have actually stopped to think about existence and the afterlife? For example, where is THE END of the universe? WHERE DID GOD COME FROM? WHY are we here? I think about all of this stuff all the time. I might sound like Psycho but I'm just a curious Biological being. My ultimate question is: Who, out of all the much repspected Forumites believes that there is only 2 layers of existence (Life & Death)? There has got to be an in-between. I'm perplexed. Also, I have visited Gnostic Chrisitanity Websites tonight that make a lot of valid points.

Some people see an anology between Neo and Jesus.
Some people missed that?

Actually the fight between Neo and Smith was ripped right out of Nietzsche. It was the battle of the Ubermensch against the legions of Nihilists. Neo's main symbollic role was just that of a messiah which is hardly unique to Christianity.

Don't even get me started on the philosophy of the Matrix, I have a disgustingly vast knowledge of such things.

neo was created to help make the matrix more perfect
that is how he was "chosen"
he and his predecessors had that job

he found the architect in 2 because that is what he was supposed to do

what he wasnt supposed to do was go back
I think he WAS supposed to go back...that's what all the other 'Neo's' had done. The architect knew that he would choose to try save Trinity instead of blowing up the source. I think what was NOT supposed to happen was Neo's ability to control the Sentinels. I haven't seen Revolutions yet, either, though, so I don't really know. Those are just my thoughts on the movie.

Love, Heather - (does this thread belong in news/Current Events)?

I saw it yesterday with my 16 year-old. I won't ruin it by telling the ending, other than to say that it was very powerful and, for me, personally moving. I do not at all agree with the critics who panned the movie. I wonder if the critics' knowledge of the Bible is weak.

The symbollism in the movie goes far far beyond the obvious Jesus/Neo parallels. He represents all Messiahs from every faith. The music is entirely made up of Sanskrit snippets from the Upanishads so Krishna/Brahma symbolism was readily apparent as well.

I don't think so. The Architect supposed that Neo would choose to save Zion, as all the other Ones had done. The proverbial monkeywrench was Neo's pure love for Trinity, which impelled him to save her, instead. I don't think the Architect had perfect foreknowledge of that choice.

IMO, the focal point is the Oracle and the Neo/Agent Smith struggle. You'll probably understand after you see Revolutions.

Probably, but I won't see it for awhile. I'll just wait patiently and wonder until it comes to DVD :)

In my opinion, this movie is all about the balance between choice and destiny. The Architect had to eventually accept man’s ability to choose. His programs for the matrix constantly failed, because he would not factor in the power of human choice. That’s why he had to create it seven times. Conversely, Neo had to learn and accept the fact that his choices were inevitably guided by his destiny. That’s why he allowed himself to be killed by Smith. He eventually realized that the only way Zion would be saved was if he chose follow through with what he was destined to do as “the chosen one”. The overall theme of this movie seems to be that choice and destiny are intertwined. The only one in this flic who seemed to understand this from the very beginning was the Oracle. She, like the Architect, had a particular outcome/destiny that she desired. However, unlike the Architect, she recognized the power of human choice. So whenever she prophesied, she didn’t tell people (Morpheus, Nyobi, Neo) exactly what would happen, she simply told them what they needed to hear, to influence the decisions they would make. As a result, her prophecies helped to bring about the destiny she desired, which was an end to the war between humans and the robots. (sorry if I spoiled the ending for anyone who hasn't seen it yet:( )

When I saw Reloaded, I thought that the Architect was the God figure. After looking at Revolution, I wonder if the Oracle was a Goddess figure (a female counter part to the Architect in the same way that Isis was the female counterpart to Osirs in Egyptian mythology).
