Anyway, I'd recommend listening to the entire thing as it's a concept album. It's also a tribute to a friend of theirs who attempted suicide, went into a coma, was brought out, and then promptly killed himself not long after. So it's all about that.

The musicianship displayed by these fine individuals is amazing. This album is incredible, and should not be listened to in pieces but in its entirety. Also when ATDI broke up the other guys not in Volta went to a band named Sparta, who are also wicked. I urge everyone here to pick up The Mars Volta's masterpiece. I think that it is selling for cheap as I was able to snag a copy for $9.99 Canadian at HMV where CD's are usually quite expensive.

I am a big fan, although I thought they were a bit pretentious when I saw them play live. I 'rediscovered' the album recently and had forgotten just how good it is. I think Q magazine or the NME in Britain made it one of their top 3 albums of 2003, which I found kind of surprising, in a good waythat is

I heard one song of theirs that I really liked (can't remember now). I'll have to check out the full CD when I can.

i have their album... AMAZING music. at first i didn't like it much, but i listened to it a few times and BAM! one of my all time favourite albums.
and i agree that you have to listen to it as an album.. it's the sort of album you can't pick a song of and glorify it... has to be thought of as a whole piece.
