  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The Machine

((Please post characters and questions in The Machine OOC))

During the Anglo-Spanish War in 1588, a privatly funded Spanish scientist attempted to create a machine that would advance the human body and create the ideal soldiers. He convinced the governemtn to allow him to test it on a select group of soldiers. To his horror, it failed drastically, mutating the men into grotesque creatures that died shortly after creating. His funding was pulled and the government locked away the secret of the horrible accident. When the Spanish lost, the scientist fled to england in hopes of escaping his tarnished name.

He remained there, unable to find his flaw. However, his young British apprentice took over the ideal after his death, hoping that the completion of the machine would give England an edge over its adversaries. The machine passed through many hands before the time for its next test was upon the. In 1776, Britain was desperate to defeat the American rebels, and agreed to a classified testing of the enhancer. The men at first saw no changes in their physical apperance, but soon, their muscles began to deteriorate, and they died. Once again, the machine had failed.

The man fled the governments anger by escaping to Germany, hoping that the government would fund further studies to enhance their troops. He was correct. He continued the tradition, takking in a worthy apprentice, teaching him the arts of the trade. In 1914 the government demanded to see results for use against Rusia and France. Once again the machine was put to the test. This time both male and female volunteers were used. This time, the people saw muscle growth and sensory advancements. However, all but one died of brain anurisms caused by the quick changes in their bodies. The last continued to grow until her skin could stretch no more and she died of blood loss from her tearing flesh.

Once again, the machine was moved. This time into Russia. The Soviet Union was the perfect place to introduce the idea of human enhancement. The Soviets agreed to fund the group that now worked upon the machine, but only if they swore to share the secret with no other country whilst they were in their employment. The machine was advanced beyond all their hopes and recieved its final test in 1938. The world was once again at war and the USSR wanted the grandest army ever seen. A group of nine people were selected for the procedure. A few days after the initial workings of the machine, the people began to see changes in themselves. Some were more intellegent then before. Others stronger or faster. They could do things that were impossible before the machine. However, something went wrong. The abilities began to take tolls on thier bodies and minds. Those gifted with intellegence began to see thing, hallucinate, and went insane. They all committed suicide. Those who were stronger found thier strength to be uncontrollable. They found that hugging was now fatal to those they loved. A high five would break the person's arm. A slight touch of the gas pedal would floor the car and send it speeding into traffic. They either died in accidents or were killed by those who despised them. The ones with speed suddenly aged far faster then any human. They died of old age within a month.

Finally, the machine was taken to America, the land of freedom and of rich benefactors and sponsors. For the era of the cold war, the machine was readied for the end. The final glitches worked out. One man,
Horatio Kanner, discovered the key in 1994. All of the other test subjects had been to old. Thier bodies could not handle so much stress. However, a body that was already changing, already hormonal, now that might be able to hold the changes. Yes, teens. That's what he needed. Subjects in their prime. Pubesent children. That was what he would use. They would be the perfect soldiers...

Ok, story line. The man will open a special school for orphans. He'll look like a selfless humanitarian and the government will give him grants for the children's education. They'll be treated very well and learn from excellent teachers. The children will all be between the ages of 11 and 19. soon after arriving at the school, the children will be invited to a one on one meeting with the headmaster (the scientist). During that meeting, the child will become unconsious and placed in the machine. When they awaken, be back in the office and the headmaster will repremand them for falling asleep.

a few days after the meeting, they begin to notice slight changes, depending on the ability they recieve. At first they'll ignore it, but as more begin to see these changes, they all wonder what might be happening. The story will play out for a while at that stage.

PART 2

Now the children know about their experimental abilities and are unsure wether to embrace them or not. The school is on the verge of bancruptcy, so the professor must do something or let all of his work come to an end. He'll decide to sell the children to one of the countries that once financed the machine's building. We'll play out more from there as well.

Dani (#14 ) set her napsack on the bed and looked around. The place was nice enough, but it didn't have a very homey feel to it. It smelt rather like a doctors office then a school. She was gonna miss--

wait, she wasn't going to miss anything. There was nothing in her life worth missing. No family to write to, no close friends to email, heck, she didn't even have a pet to think of. she was alone in the world, and nothing in this school could change that.

She looked at the other bed in the room. Great, now I've got to deal with a room mate. and here I was thinking I'd be better off here. Now I'll have to desa with a room mate one on one. It was easy to hide with five...

dani placed her pack on top of the dresser, since she really didn't feel much like sitting around in the room. she pulled out the brochure she had recieved a couple weeks ago and looked through it for something todo. There was a cafateria, a pool, a library, a gym, and an outdoor arena. She decided to head down to the cafateria for some lunch.

.....................................................................................................................

Xavier (#15 ) sat on the bus, looking out the window. They had been driving through the country for days. Apparently the state didn't have enough money to fly the small bunch of orphans down to the school, so they had taken the decades old bus cross country to get them there. The highways hadn't been so bad, but all this senic route country fields roads had made him feel claustrophobic and the bus. He was anxious to get out and stretch his legs. Mostly, he wanted to be home. Stability; he craved it more than he had ever desired anything before. No more moving around when he became inconvenient. Once he was finished here he'd be a free man.

All the younger children squeled as the mansion became visible in the distance. Two little girls jumped up and started dancing around until the driver repremanded them and made them sit again. Xavier was just as excited as they were, but he was trying to contain his enthusiasm. Still, he couldn't help but laugh along with the other children as their future grew closer and closer.

Adam(#16 ) walked up to the secretary counter. The busy little secretary was fidgeting with all of the papers and files.
"Um, I just arrived, am I in the right place?"
The secretary didn't even look up from her files. "Name?" She asked plainly.
"Oh, Adam , Adam Tarn." He told her.
She rolled her chair over to the file cabinet, scurried throught the files for a little, then ulled one out. She rolled back to the counter. "Mr, Tarn." She looked up and up at the teenager. She paused for a moment. "Well, here is your room number and room key, your room mate has not yet arrived. And here is a map of the campus and your scedual for now. You may go to your room and get settled in, but later this evening is orientation. You will hav the oppertunity to meet with the dean peronally and he will go over all the rules and regualtions here. Understood?" She said with a tone that implied even if he didn't she wouldn't repeat it again.
"Yes mam." Adam said then walked far away from the counter.

Elizabeth (#6) looked up as the mansion came into view and grinned. This would be her home for the next few years. No more foster parents. No more capricious foster siblings who alternated between love and disdain on a daily basis. No more being shuffled around the system every few years. Stability. Friendship.

She turned to the girl sitting next to her and flashed a dazzling smile. "Can you believe it? We're going to live there! I'm so excited!" The girl smiled politely, still engrossed in her book. She'd first started reading it at the first potty stop and hadn't put it down since. Nor had Elizabeth given up in her quest to get the girl to put it down. Still, it was an uphill battle.

Giving up for the moment, Elizabeth turned to the two orphans behind her, blond curls bouncing. "We should start up a chorus of something!"

"Yeah!" one agreed, and began to sing. "Oooooohhhhh.....This is the song that never ends..."

Elizabeth joined in immediately. "It goes on and on my friends...."

Several more joined in. "Some people started singing it not knowing what it was, and now they sing it on and on forever just because this is the song that never ends, it goes on and on my friends..."

((I'm assuming she's on th4 same bus as Xavier))

Xavier smiled as a young girl started up another round of the song that never end. He remembered it from some of the Lamb Chop videos he had seen his grandparent's house. back before they went into the nursing home. Before he was sent to evry other relative that may or may not have wanted him.

Well, at least these kids would feel wanted. They were going to growup here, make friends here, and have a life. One school until they graduate. He couldn't help but feel jealous. He'd lost track of the number of schools he'd attended. The number of 'friends' who'd forgotten him the day after he'd left. Well, he'd make a few here, he'd make sure of that. As they turned into the driveway, a couple of the younger girls let out wild shrieks. He stood up nd grabbed his bags, ready to get off the bus the second they pulled to a stop.

.............................................................................................................

Dani grabbed a tossed salad off the counter and walked to a table. A couple of others were already in the cafateria eating, chatting, getting to know each other. dani made her way to the table by the window, where no one would bother her thoughts. She really needed to figure out why she was here and what she was to expect from this place. Could it be trusted, or should she keep her bags packed so that she'd be ready when they let her go like the inconvenience she was convinced she was.

"Here it is!" Elizabeth could hardly contain her excitement. Her new life began here, the moment she stepped off the bus.

"It's like we're starting over!" she exclaimed to her seatmate, who didn't look up from her book when she spoke.

"Kinda like death, isn't it?"

Elizabeth drew back an inch or two in surprise. "Kinda like what?"

"Kinda like death. Life back there sucks--that's this world. Things keep getting worse and worse, 'til we think we can't take it no more--like death. Then these people--kinda like angels--come for us--and take us to heaven--this school." She laughed bitterly. "This bus ride was purgatory."

Elizabeth laughed along, resolving not to let her seatmate's somewhat disturbing analogy ruin this moment. As the bus pulled to a stop, she grabbed her backpack and tiny suitcase, readying herself for the post-bus ride rush for the door.

"Here we go," her seatmate said. "Off through the pearly gates."

((Everloving, if you don't mind, I'd like to make Elizabeth's seatmate the computer genius...I kind of like her....:p))

Addie (#11) grabbed her backpack and duffle bag as the bus pulled to a stop, but didn't stand. Her seatmate had already joined the end-of-the-ride rush for the door, but Addie had long since discovered that the best way to beat the rush was to wait for it to end. So she sat, one shoulder strap on her shoulder and hand on her duffle bag, until the second-to-last orphan stumbled from the bus. Then she simply walked to the door and jumped down, taking her time in walking to the mansion's doors.

It was pretty here, she decided, like something out of a fantasy novel. Pansies and petunias edged the long brick path to the door, which was flanked by rosebushes. Addie paused next to the rosebushes to admire the flowers, blooming amidst thorns. Guarding themselves was more like it. Beauty lay there for the taking, but thorns blocked all but the most determined. Just like it should be, Addie thought before pushing through the ornate wooden double doors.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Isn't it pretty here?" Elizabeth gushed as she and another girl bounded up the path. She paused next to a pansy that edged the path. "I wonder if we can pick these...probably shouldn't." She knew what happened if you broke the rules with strict foster parents, and didn't want to risk the same results with the headmaster. Slightly disappointed, Elizabeth moved on and continued bounding, like a sparrow flitting from branch to branch, up the path.

She stopped in the entryway, marveling at the decor. Paintings from every era hung on the wood-panel walls--genuine wood, not the fake wood she'd seen in so many foster homes, but real wood from real trees. High above, the ceiling ended in glass windows to the sky, revealing puffy white clouds against a blue canopy.

Someone bumped into her, abruptly ending her reverie. "Oh, sorry," she said, blushing, then recognized her seatmate.

"That's okay." She continued staring at the ceiling. "It's like....I dunno...sorta what I always thought Cair Paravel would be like."

"Cair Paravel?"

"From Narnia?"

"I never read the Narnia books. Didn't have much time."

"Oh. That really sucks. I brought all seven, if you want to borrow them sometime."

Elizabeth smiled. "That'd be fun!"

The girl smiled in return. "Yeah." She finally tore her gaze from the ceiling and stuck out her hand. "I'm Addie."

Elizabeth shook it. "Liz. We might want to get inside...I heard they've got lunch."

"Yeah." Addie grabbed her suitcase and followed Elizabeth into the mansion.

Adam hauled the garbage bag that held all of his possesions over his shoulder and headed for the stairs. A new place, a new start. After traveling down the hallway and taking a left around the corner, Adam looked directly at the room number on the door before him. Room 209. He took out eh small key from his pocket onopened the door to his new home. The small room held two beds, two dresser and two nightstands, one desk, and one couch. The bathrooms were down the hall and the T.V. was in the rec. room.
"Not too shaby." Adam sad outloud to himself. "That lady wasn't joking about a room mate." Adam quickly tossed his bag and papers onto the bed nearest the door. He took all of his clothes out of te bag and shoved them into one of the dressers, placed his hairbrush and tooth brush into his nightstand draw, and tossed his dirty old soccer ball next to his bed.
Lastly, he took out an old photo of him and his father, and hid it under all his clothes. "That should do it." He said rather satisfied with his unpacking skills. He picked up the trash pag and trew it in the trash can. "Hopefully i wont need this for a long time."
On his way to his room, Adam had recalled passing a caffeteria, and boy was he hungry. Now that he was all "settledd in" headed back down the stairs he had jus recently came up, in search of the caffeteria.

as the oldest amongst the group, Xavier took the post of leading the others through the mansion doors. Some of the kids were anxious and excited to find thier new home, while others seemed terrified of what might lie ahead. a woman walked out and greeted the group.

"we've been expecting you all." she smiled larger than life. Xavier decided to return the toothy grin.

"We've had a long trip and were hoping we could have some lunch.."

"Oh, most certainly. Just wait one moment.." she began digging through her large purse. "Ah ha!! Here they are!" she pulled out a large bulky envelope. "In here are all of you romm assignments and a room key for each of you. The key will allow you into your room, as well as into other areas of the campus. The younger children's cards are limited to certain facilities at specific times, but the older teens should have access to just about anywhere. The cafaterias is down the hall to your right, three doors down. You can't miss it. If you want, you can all leave your bags here and come back for them after lunch."

Xavier smiled and thanked her before turning to the group. "we're going to leave our bags here for now and get some lunch. I'll give each of you your room assignments and keys once we've gotten some food. Follow me."

Riley(#23 ) laid back in the car seat and watched as the school gew as it they got closer and closer. "Here we are." Her Aunt Liza said as the car came to a stop. "Now that didn't take as long as we thought it would, did it?"
Riley and her four cousins in the back of the van all moned at the same time. "It wouldn't have taken so long if Tyler didn't have to pee every twenty minutes. " Riley said staring at her cousin. "Well thats what happens when you get the super slurpie." Her cousin Rob siad as he rolled his eyes.
"Well you should all be glad we made the six hour trip out here; now you get to see where Riley wll be staying and say good bye to her." Her unle Tom told them all.
The whole group started to unload from the car. "Rob, help your cousin with her bags."
"Like I really need the help." Riley said out loud. But her cousin hauled the duffel bag ot of the trunk and stated to carry it for her anyway. They all walked her into the school together, and soon the time came for goodbyes. "Well, cant say I wont miss all you'all." Riley said becoming as emotional as she would ever get.
"Now if tere is any problem at all you just let us know and well come and get you right away; we'll just have to find away to work things out."
She gave her aunt and uncle a giant bear hugg.
Thn she began to sat good bye to all her cousins. "Chris, Rob, Jeff, and Tyler." She sighed, "What am i gonna do without you guys."
"I guess you'll just have to make friends with a bunch of girls." Tyler said with a laugh. Riley made a face.
"You just make sure, if you happen to get yourself a boyfriend, you let us know; so we can come down here and give him a good talking to." Rob told her.
"Will do."
They all gave her a ginormous group hugg. Then her oldest cousin Chris gave her a hug and wispered, "you just remember this is only a temporary thing. Once I'm done with college, I'll be comming back to get you."
"I'll be looking forward to it. "

She said her final good byes and watched the car pull away. A small tear drop ran down her face, but she imdiately wipped it away. She then turned around and headed into her new life.

Elizabeth and Addie rejoined the group just as the lady with the 99 cent plastic smile from K-Mart greeted them, rambling on and on about room assignments and keys and roommates. Addie tuned out until she mentioned lunch. Her stomach rumbled, reminding her that the last thing she'd eaten had been a bag of chips at the last potty stop.

"We're going to leave our bags here for now and get some lunch."

Elizabeth gladly dropped her backpack and suitcase at her feet, as the other kids were doing and followed Plastic Smile. Addie, however, held onto her backpack and duffle bag, remembering how kids could get when they saw something they wanted that was left unguarded.

"Miss," Plastic Smile said, "why don't you leave your bags here? We'll take them up to your room for you."

Addie shook her head. "I'd rather keep them with me."

"The cafeteria will be too crowded." This lady talked like a heavily medicated preschool teacher.

"I'll keep them with me." At that, Plastic Smile gave up and led the group into the cafeteria. Addie followed at the back of the group, quietly marveling at the mansion. Elizabeth skipped ahead at the front, singing to herself.

Something told Addie that she and Elizabeth would end up roommates.

Adam finished his journey and finally found the caffeteria. He stepped inot the crowded room fully of excited children. Adam just stood there, wearing his torn jeans and black tee shirt to match his equally black semi long hair. He noticed a table full of sandwiches in the not too far distance and started to make his way over. Keeping his eyes focused on the food thet he so much desired, Adam didn't noticed the small singing girl skipping toward him. Within seconds Adam collided with the small girl. Adam was at least a foot or two taller than the poor girl; she didn't have a chance.

"Hey! You wanna watch where your going!" He yelled at the litlle girl as he towered over her.

"Hey! You wanna watch where you're going!"

Elizabeth stopped so abruptly she almost fell over as a giant yelled at her. She shrank back toward the wall, unable to look him in the eye. "Sor-sorry," she mumbled, repeating that word as she slunk away, putting a good fifteen feet between them. She didn't notice Addie was next to her until she spoke.

"He was just telling you to be careful."

"Yeah, but he didn't have to be so mean!" Addie saw that Elizabeth's eyes sparkled with tears. She's just too sensitive, Addie thought, shaking her head minutely. To Elizabeth, she smiled reassuringly. "He didn't mean it like that. Just didn't want to mow you over, that's all." She looked up at the cafeteria, a mere fifty feet away. "I'm gonna go get some lunch. You wanna come?" Addie half-hoped she would say no, but Elizabeth nodded. "Okay, let's go get in line. C'mon." And with that, the two girls walked into the cafeteria and got in line.

They were a strange pair, Elizabeth and Addie: Elizabeth, her blond curls pulled back with a light pink headband, wearing a frilly denim skirt and pink top; Addie, her straight black hair pulled back into a ponytail, wearing jeans and a grey T-shirt. However, both ordered pizza and sodas, and by the time lunch was over, the two were chatting comfortably with each other.

Dani watched as some big jock guy slammed into a little girl, then had the nerve to yell at her.

"Jerk." she mumbled. She hated when people yelled. She hate when people fought, but what she hated most was people who picked on those weaker then them. Wether a bully picking on a small child, or a world power taking over a destitute nation, she copuldn't stand it. Everyone deserved a fair chance, even though no one had ever given her one. She had half a mind to put the guy in place, but when he walked away from the kid, she decided to let it go and went back to her food.

Xavier walked into the cafateria and grabbed a tray. He loaded it with a baked potato, two chicken wings, and corn muffin, and a pepsi. He figured that there wouldn't be a huge buffet at the school for every meal, so he decided to take advantage of it. He added on a small salad, french fries, and a big piece of chocolate cake for desert. He wasn't sure if there were supposed to be assigned seats or anything, but he figured if someone wanted to correct him, he'd move. He sat down at a table right in the middle, hoping a couple of people would see the empty seats and join him.

Elizabeth saw one of the older boys sit down by himself. The benevolent guardian, the "big brother" of the group, sitting by himself? Blasphemy.

"C'mon, let's go sit with him!" Elizabeth stood and grabbed her plate.

Addie didn't move. "What's wrong with where we are?"

"C'mon, Addie, please? We can't just make him sit off by himself!" People are mean here, she added privately, and nobody's messing with him.

Addie sighed. "Fine." She grabbed her plate and followed Elizabeth to the boy's table, then sat down at the farthest chair, allowing melancholy thoughts of Cair Paravel and being called away to Narnia carry her as Elizabeth chattered excitedly.

"Hi! I'm Liz! What's your name?"

Xavier spotted a hot girl just getting off the food line and he waved to her, hoping she might decide to come sit by him. Suddenly, someone else was pulliing out the seat behind him.

"Hi! I'm Liz! What's your name?"

The hottie made a giggling face and turned to sit at another table. Xavier hung his head in a dissapointment, then turned to the girl. There turned out to be two.

"I'm Xavier..." he tried to smile at the girls. It wasn't there fault he issed meeting a babe. "So, are you guys nervous about being here? Ya know, new school and all."

Xavier couldn't help but feel joyous along with the girl.

"I'm from all over the country. My last homw was in Texas, though. I guess this will be my new home." He smiled at his own optimism.
"So, ladies, where exactly are you from??"

It had been a long trip, and by the time they finally arrived, Belle wanted to do two things, besides unpacking, she wanted to sleep and she wanted to swim. When she checked in at the desk, she recieved the needed things. She carried her bags to her room, and unpacked them. After making her bed, she reflected on how inviting it looked. So, she pulled the first layer of covers and took an hour nap. Afterwards, she felt she needed to wake up, so she changed into her swimsuit and started doing laps in the pool. Afterwards, she was hungry, so she changed back into her clothes and walked into the cafeteria. It was crowded. She winced, because she hadn't expected so many people. So, pretending she was ignoring them, she got herself some lunch (I'm presuming) and settled herself down at a window ledge.
