[FONT=arial,helvetica,sans-serif]Police anger over ban on arrests during Ramadan[/FONT]

Manchester Police have been told not to arrest Muslims at prayer times during the holy month of Ramadan. The order is said to have angered a number of officers in the Greater Manchester force. An internal email listing prayer times has been sent to officers who have been asked not to execute arrest warrants during prayer times for reasons of religious sensitivity.

'The month of Ramadan is an important time of the year for members of the Muslim community throughout the world,' said a spokesman for Greater Manchester Police who stressed the instruction applied only to warrants and not to on-the-spot arrests.

Oh, stop it, guys. The order is only not to arrest people during prayer time. That's only ten minutes five times a day, AND Muslims usually pray in groups, which means breaking up a whole group (whether in a mosque or not).

I very much doubt that police would break in, say, on a group reciting the Rosary together. And if they were in the habit of doing so, we would darn well feel justified in complaining, and asking them to be more sensitive.

good point.

I do think equal treatment should have been given to all however, rather than special treatment given to only the Muslims.
For example, a statement which would not allow anyone to be arrested during their particular Mass/Worship/Prayer service (provided it was less than 1 hour long).

Cops keep the faith
POLICE have been told to take their shoes off and not use sniffer dogs when raiding Muslim homes.
An 18-point guide issued by Bedfordshire Police lists dos and don'ts when dealing with Muslims who are suspected of terrorist or drugs offences.
The guidelines, which were reissued last week, state that 'the Muslim community feels victimised and suspicious of counter terrorist police operations and in the current climate a search at a British Muslim household has the potential to become a critical incident and come under intense scrutiny'.
It then lists 18 points police officers should note.
These include:
• Rapid entry needs to be the last resort and raids into Muslim houses are discouraged for religious dignity reasons.
• Police should seek to avoid looking at unclad Muslim women and allow them to dress and cover their heads.
• For reasons of dignity officers should seek to avoid entering occupied bedrooms and bathrooms.
• Use of police dogs will be considered serious desecration of the premises and may necessitate extensive cleaning of the house and disposal of household items.
• Advice should be sought before considering the use of cameras and camcorders due to the risk of capturing individuals, especially women, in inappropriate dress.
• Muslim prisoners should be allowed to take additional clothing to the station.
• If people are praying at home officers should stand aside and not disrupt the prayer. They should be allowed the opportunity to finish.
• Officers should not take shoes into the houses, especially in areas that might be kept pure for prayer purposes.
• In the current climate the justification for pre-dawn raids on Muslim houses needs to be clear and transparent.
• Non-Muslims are not allowed to touch holy books, Qurans or religious artefacts without permission. Where possible, Muslim officers in a state of 'Wudhu' should be used for this purpose.
A Bedfordshire Police spokesman said: "The guidelines are regularly issued to all staff as a reminder of the force protocol when entering a Muslim household.
"We take very seriously the culture surrounding all faiths and feel it is important to respect those beliefs, even while carrying out police business.
"We would like to reassure all communities that any current or perceived tensions, which might be heightened as a result of recent events, will not affect how police deal with Muslims or anyone else." Zafar Khan, chairman of Luton Council of Faiths, said: "Guidelines on how to deal and interact with the community in all faiths should be welcomed."

One of the comments on the web page was nice.

Pigs are used to hunt for truffles, surely they could be trained to search for explosives. Maybe the police could use a sniffer pig and leave the dogs outside.

And at what times are these police prohibited from arresting Christians, Jews, Sikhs, etc.?

I think European cops simply realize that Christians and Jews don't do things like this:

National police reported 2,458 cases of violence against officers in the first six months of the year, on pace to top the 4,246 cases recorded for all of 2005 and the 3,842 in 2004. Firefighters and rescue workers have also been targeted — and some now receive police escorts in such areas.

"First, it was a rock here or there. Then it was rocks by the dozen. Now, they're leading operations of an almost military sort to trap us," said Loic Lecouplier, a police union official in the Seine-Saint-Denis region north of Paris. "These are acts of war."

I seriously doubt that policemen have ever disrupted a Jewish Sabbath meal or a prayer in a synagogue. If they had, we would never again have stopped hearing about it!:) No, seriously, the prohibition probably had to be issued because there is so much police action against Muslims these days. And British police would have no idea, unless they were told specifically, how serious it is to enter a Muslim home with shoes, with a dog, to touch holy objects and to barge in on uncovered women. I am familiar with Muslims, I KNOW this, well enough to make me wince at the thought! As a rough comparison, it is the equivalent of strip-searching a Westerner in public and [wash my mouth][wash my mouth][wash my mouth][wash my mouth][wash my mouth][wash my mouth][wash my mouth][wash my mouth] all over his home. We would be betraying our Western values of democracy and human dignity if we did this to people without dire necessity - certainly to people who have not yet been formally accused of anything.

I think European cops simply realize that Christians and Jews don't do things like this:

Excuse me? Are you kidding? Have you any idea what a crowd of angry (European) men can do to a police force they hate, or to any group they hate? Do you honestly think that only Muslims will be capable of disgusting violence? You've never followed the antics of extreme right-wingers in Europe. Or the student uprisings in Europe and the US in the 1960s. Or some episodes of the fall of Communism in the Balkans. I think (not sure though) that recent Irish history has a few examples too. And I won't even mention the horrors that can happen in Christian Africa.

Even the events that your article describes are not the work purely of Muslims. Those gangs include some French people and a lot of non-Muslim immigrants from Africa and the Balkans.

Sorry for the repeated orders to wash my mouth! Before this, I trusted CF to just automatically replace an unacceptable word with asterisks, so I just used to type it out anyway. Now it seems they've gotten tougher. I'll watch my style next time!
