Today I noticed on the Eastern Orthodox calendar that July 4 honors the "Royal Martyrs of Russia". I read some books about the Romanovs and the Russian Revolution, and I thought they were given the title "Passion-Bearers"? Is that synonymous with martyr?

it can be. a passion bearer is someone who dies in a Christlike manner (like someone who is killed, but not because they are Christians and forgives those who kill them, etc. whereas a martyr is someone who is killed because they are Christian. some folks think that the Romanovs were killed because they represented the Empire, and most say that they were killed because of their faith. personally, I fall in the martyr camp since they were glorified among the martyrs under the Soviet yoke.

Yes, it is. A passion-bearer is someone who had to suffer and/or die like a martyr. The Romanovs were ony called passion-bearers for a long time because it took our Church many years to canonize them as saints. So now yes, they are martyrs.
