I know this might be simple to some but in Matthew 13:45-46 45 " Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, 46 "who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it.

What do you think the pearl is? I really would like to know what others think..

The kingdom of heaven is a valuable treasure indeed. It is so valuable that those that wish to be accepted into it must be willing to give up everything! Jesus is the way into heaven, and following Jesus is a task which costs us everything that we have (Matthew 8:19,20). That is what the pearl describes, heaven, and that pearl is very expensive ^_^

I have heard it described as being God seeking mankind, gave up the most precious thing he had to redeem us: His Son.

One thing I like about this verse is that a pearl is something that man cannot make with his hands. No temple, no building, no ministry, can be this pearl.

Here is another instance of someone being told to sell all they have and give it away:

Mark 10:17-22
17 Now as He was going out on the road, one came running, knelt before Him, and asked Him, "Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?" 18 So Jesus said to him, "Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. 19 You know the commandments: 'Do not commit adultery,' 'Do not murder,' 'Do not steal,' 'Do not bear false witness,' 'Do not defraud,' 'Honor your father and your mother.'" 20 And he answered and said to Him, "Teacher, all these I have observed from my youth." 21 Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, "One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me." 22 But he was sad at this word, and went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.
NKJV

If you will notice every commandment mentioned up to Jesus telling this fellow to sell everything had to do with earthly things, so Jesus cuts to the heart of the matter. That is, where is this fellows heart set? On earthly things or on heavenly things? Basically, set you mind on those things above and keep a light touch on the things of the earth.

I hope that helps, if not, just ignore it.........^_^

Yes, we have to be prepared to give up everything that we hold dear. As Jesus was telling his diciples before the sermon on the mount, we have to be prepared to face prosecution for our belief in Him and not expect to receive fame or riches for believing in Him. We also have to be prepared to give up our lives on this earth to follow our savior!

It has nothing to do with given up everything. That's a pipe dream. " If only I can get to the place where I'm so spiritual I can give up everything I would be somebody." WORKS!!!!!!!!! It might be news to you all but you already have. Before the foundation of the world. It simple means that the "things" of this world are meaningless to you.
Actually, no. The things of this world are meaningless to everyone from the day they exit the womb (or the test tube, only God knows what people are doing nowadays :| )... it is seriously more difficult to live the life of a Christian than it is to live the life of anyone else! Face it, the world hates us! (John 17:14) And it's not about "being somebody". It's all about following that one somebody who really matters (Jesus :holy: ).

There is a debate as to whether it refers to the church or to the Jewish remenant. I favour the latter. But one need consider that in prophesy the sea refers to gentiles and as pearls come from the sea so the pearl may refer to the church...or because Jesus went into the house (which can also mean Israel) it may mean that the pearl is Jewish... As I am unable to debate here if you want further input then come to the inter-denominational forum.

Jesus is the Merchant who went (from where He was, i.e., heaven) and sold/gave up all that He had (His glory with the Father-Jn. 17:4, etc.), to buy the Pearl, the Church, (His glorious inheritance-Eph.1:18) with His blood (Acts.20:28).

Absolutely.

Of my meditative verses, Matthew 13:44 is my favorite.

44The kingdom of heaven is like [2] something precious buried in a field, which a man found and hid again; then in his joy he goes and sells all he has and buys that field.

When I meditate on this verse, I am brought into the Presence of the Lord in my spirit.

He is the Treasure and the Pearl! Not just knowing about Him! But truly experiencing Him in His fullness!
