  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Romans 8:13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
Romans 8:14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

This scripture is telling us that it is only by Gods Spirit that we can overcome sin, and that not of our own strength or ability; we must be led. The Holy Spirit will show us what to do to overcome the sin if we would only listen and obey.

To me, walking in the spirit is walking in faith. And faith comes by hearing the word of God.

The more we meditate on God's Word, the more or faith will grow. When we commune together with other Christians, our faith is further strengthed as a result.

Can you imagine the effect on our faith if we lived and communed with other believers 24/7, like the first Christians? It would make it a lot easier, I feel, to continue in the spirit, and avoid the works of the flesh.

Being forgiven of our sin in totality is a reality, even if we haven't overcome it yet.

But, I like to think of obedience as a way to gain our blessing from God, our testimony as a Christian to others, and living peaceably with others and with ourselves especially are motivators to overcome sin. Romans 6:1-4 says

What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it? Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.

It's saying, let's not decide to continue sinning because we have already died to it in Christ. Why would we want to continue living in condemnation?? It isn't pleasant, and we need to seek the resurrection in Christ and walk a newness of life. It's crummy for us to live with sinful consequences if we don't have to! Living with ourselves would become hard if not impossible if we decided to sin more and more so that grace would abound. Grace would abound, but what a terrible way to live.

This is absolutely correct. I can't understand why so many Christians struggle with sin, or even focus on it. One can't focus on two things at once! We should "walk" by the Spirit, never forgetting that the fruit of the Spirit is "love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control".

If, in my day-to-day life, I'm not experiencing these "fruits" then I'm not being led by the Spirit. I go even more into God's word and prayer, fasting on occasion when things seem to be going off track.
