The Ketoret

Does anyone have any thoughts on the significance of the Ketoret? I would be particularly interested in any possible connection to Moshiach. It seems to be a deep mystery that the Rabbi's have little comment on...at least little comment that I can find.

I would also be interested in the role the Ketoret played in Yom Kippur.

For those that are clueless of what he is asking about, here:

What was ketoret? The ketoret was a compound of eleven (11) different spices, which weighed approximately 1,840 pounds [836.36 kg]. From this compound an incense offering (also called ketoret) was brought in the Beit HaMikdash (Holy Temple). This offering was brought twice daily, once as part of the morning service and once as part of the afternoon service. This happened seven days a week, every day of the year, including Shabbat and Yom Kippur. (Five pounds of ketoret was burnt daily, half in the morning and half in the afternoon.)

EH, Do you want to talk about what happened when it was offered wrongly? ie, Korach? Or maybe the heavenly offering? Or just Yom kippur?

It should be noted that there is a VERY strict prohibition in scripture from anyone even attempting to replicate the Ketoret except for use in the Temple as instructed by HaShem Using the individual spices/oils or even combining some of them is not forbidden, trying to replicate the Temple Spice is

Wow, some facinating links.........i don't understand a lot of it, but hey
I would like to smell the ketoret someday. Do the Rabbis know how to make it still or has it been forgotten? Do they burn any of it, or is it just for the temple?

Yes the Levites know how to make this, and yes, it absolutely is JUST for use in the Temple

Thanks for the thoughts and links. If I understand correctly, the Ketoret seems to have a very deep meaning related to "Bonding". Thinking as I type here, would the fact that it was featured in the Yom Kippur service suggest a role in the Covenant bond between HaShem and Yisrael mediated by The Word? When reading the account of the Ketoret in the PseudoJohn Targum, I get the idea that the tamid Ketoret was to effect a meeting place between The Word and Yisrael. More specifically, The Word would be physically located between HaShem and Yisrael. (English translation at http://www.tulane.edu/~ntcs/pj/psjon.htm, see Exodus 30)

The link to the Orthodox Brit Chadeshah got me thinking about Rev 8. Is this (i.e. Rev 8:3-5) a reference to the establishment of the Renewed/Renovated Covenant? In other words, if the Ketoret of Yom Kippur has meaning related to the Bond of the Covenant, could its deeper (sod?) meaning be a reference to the Bond of the Everlasting/Renewed/Renovated Covenant? Some of the imagery here suggest Covenant like the earthquake etc. On the otherhand, the censor is actually thrown down. I am not aware that this event ever occured during the Temple ceremony. Could this, then, be the end of the Tamid Ketoret? Maybe, this is what is referred to in Daniel 8 concerning the end of the Tamid?

Hmmm....
