  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Isaiah refers to “the islands” (Isa.49:18) as though it is a specific place or nation. To what is he referring?

The islands of the Mediterranean Sea. If you look at a map of that sea you'll see countless islands south of Greece. One of them is Patmos where John was exiled to. They were almost mythological among the ancient Jews. They were viewed as distant, unknown, and exotic. To say "the islands" almost means "the ends of the earth", or "everywhere".

The islands are accounted for as the gentile nations surrounding Israel. Israel was surrounded by enemies and suffered wars and invasions at the hands of those nations. The meaning is that God will avenge all the wrongs done to Israel by their enemies. The islands are mentioned in Isaiah, but Isaiah is a complicated book. It is believed to be composed of three sections, each section written at a different time by a different writer. Some mention of the islands in Isaiah refers to the gathering of the scattered Jews before and during the Babylonian captivity. During the Babylonian invasion, while a lot of Jews were taken away to Babylon, many others fled Israel to escape and ended up in the surrounding territories.
