The doctrine of the investigative judgement is very important because it is being decided who will be lost or saved for eternity. The question of whether I am saved is a vital question. I've just release a book, "The Investigative Judgement: Am I Saved?" which I hope will answer some of these questions. The imporant thing is to focus on Jesus our all powerful Mediator so our sins can be forgiven and we can be an overcomer.

The book of Revelation repeatedly speaks about the overcomers. But Satan tries to get us to forget about these things, to be complacent, to trust in our own works, to think of the things of this world so we won't be ready for heaven. Being complacent and being legalistic both turn our eyes away from Jesus.

And so, what is your definition of being an overcomer?

There are many things that distinguish an overcomer, for example, the overcomer resists the devil (James 4:7), he is running for the prize of eternal life (1 Cor. 9:24-27), he is obedient to the law (1 John 2:3-4) and seeks to perfect his character in the fear of the Lord (2 Cor. 7:1). But the "loser" seeks the pleasures of this world, he does not resist the devil, he is not running the race, he breaks the law of God.

Chapter 9 of the book is "are you an overcomer or a loser". The word for overcome is found a number of times in the book of Revelation. The greek word and its form suggests continually overcoming, habitually conquering, or to keep on winning. The Greek word means to overcome with the help of divine aid.

There are many promises given to the overcomer especially in the book of Revelation, such as access to the tree of life and to have your name retained in the book of life.

This is only possible through Christ who is the all powerful Mediator. His victory can be ours by faith (1 Cor. 15:57; 1 John 4:4-5; 5:4)

Okay, that sounds good to me, then. The reason that I asked is that I have seen many people including some SDAs claiming that we overcome 'by the word of our testimony' and they seem to leave out the idea of actually overcoming sin altogether.

But in my opinion you have ti right, we are to be careful not to rely upon our own works, and overcome sin, by faith.

I would just add to that list though, the idea of overcoming not only by faith but also by the promises of God, as it says in the chapter about Peter's Ladder and becoming partakers of the divine nature through the promises.

And also by keeping very close to God, talking to Him all day long and studying the Scriptures. Close communion with God is what I mean.

Resisting the Devil was a good thing for you to put down too, and the Apostle Paul said we are to run the race, as you said, setting aside every sin that so easily besets us.

Anyway thanks for taking time to answer and I am glad that you are 'walking in the light' it seems.
