Traveling in a straight line along the surface will bring one back to where he started from. So we could assume if we knew nothing else that we either live on the outside or the inside of a sphere, but of course we do know more; dont we? The earth casts its shadow on the moon during an eclipse and ships disappear over the horizon hull first due to the curve; so outside it is.
Cyrus Teed wasnt content to accept the assumed knowledge of the day in 1896 and set about to prove that the Earths curve was concave and not convex. Although there had been theories proposed of a hollow earth before with polar openings leading to world with its own atmosphere and sun, Cyrus claimed we were already there. Sufficiently magnified the lesser image will subtend an angle enabling the eye to perceive it. This proved to be a problem since due to the commonly accepted convex curve of the earth one should only be able to see as far as the curve will allow. Any reference on geodesy or geometry will calculate this curvature from a tangent to the earth to increase as a square of the distance at a rate of 8 inches per mile, the second mile 32 inches, the third 72 inches, etc. For a 6 foot man standing on shore this would yield a horizon of 3 miles, but of course its much more. Anyone can essentially see around corners and with a telescope more of whats around them. The prevailing explanation for this is that light from the source travels in a curve; light refracting down due to the denser atmosphere closer to the surface. If this is the case it certainly isnt because it had been definitively measured and tested to be true, but is a necessary viable explanation needed to conform to the current planetary model of the earth.
To settle the question once and for all Cyrus Teed along with Professor Ulysses G. Morrow conducted an experiment on the shore of the Gulf of Mexico near Naples, Fl where a mechanical line was extended for miles with the use of a rectilinear (12 foot sections of double t-squares) where light refraction, if it be a factor in sightings, would not come into play. Newspapers from around the country including the Chicago Tribune, the Times Herald and the Chicago Journal had covered Teeds theory before and now described the continuing experiments on the shores of the Gulf. If the earths surface be convex, the extended line from any tangent to its surface would gradually diverge from and increase in distance from the surface; if concave it would eventually intersect the same. At a distance of four and one half miles, intersected it did. Impossible for a three dimensionally discerned reality though it may be, those were the results. This would naturally place the heavens and all their host within the confines of an 8000 mile diameter sphere, a sorely undersized container for the moon alone and the distance traveled to it, let alone the sun and and the enormous distances to stars. Naturally the experiment must have been at fault for it conflicts with what we already know to be true; that the earth spins on its axis every 24 hours on its yearly circuit around the sun as do the other planets on their own journeys in their own times. It seems to make perfect sense; after all, weve ventured to far reaches of the heavens and walked on the moon and everything looks kosher explained within the Copernican model that we are but a ping pong ball in motion. There are serious problems however that remain with this model. If you accept that the earth is in motion and that you are spinning, this would mean that for a person on the equator 4000 miles would drop out from under his feet in the space of 6 hours; quite a drop for the Brazilian compared to our 2000 mile drop in Chicago or the no drop at all for the polar inhabitant with no discenable difference in weight which one would expect as from an elevator dropping out from under ones feet.
What we are taught and believe to be true it seems is suspect and is only an apparency of what may be a four spatially dimensioned universe. Measurements and distances are valid, but only valid from their peculiar frame of reference which would also imply that shapes are only valid from their own frame of reference. Cyrus, alas, had accepted the three-dimensioned reality of his peers with a model the antithesis of the accepted Copernican reality. No one even felt it necessary to even repeat a similar experiment to refute his claims but were content conjecture on how it was flawed. The myopic outlook has continued today albeit with the new and improved reality incorporating the dimensionality of space-time to accommodate some of its inconsistencies.
