  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Alright.

I added you on my userlist, but it's not really registering you. Is your user name "Blackwasp" with the "b" capitalized? It may be case sensitive.

If I'm not on soulseek, just send me an IM and I'll get on (if my away message is on, I'm still probably around)

If I didn't screw something up, I should be registered as Blackwasp. Oh well.

i Just listened to Saint Etienne's 'Lose That Girl' and i can't get enough of it. I've always had an interest in Indie but never really looked into it, but now, i think i should.

Seriously, here goes the fourth time i a row i'm listening to that song. And this comes from someone who likes Black Metal! (don't need a post about wide tastes, i'm just joking).

Anyway, I'm wondered if i can get recommended some difintive Indie bands/artists to get me started.

Here are some albums that I think are definitive in the history of Indie, but I'm probably forgetting some really important ones:

"Surfer Rosa" -- Pixies
"Crooked Rain Crooked Rain" -- Pavement
"Spiderland" -- Slint
"OK Computer" -- Radiohead
"In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" -- Neutral Milk Hotel
"The Moon and Antarctica" -- Modest Mouse
"Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" -- Wilco

Sonic Youth- Daydream Nation
Yo La Tengo- I Can Feel the Heart Beating as One
My Bloody Valentine- Loveless
Belle and Sebastian- If You're Feeling Sinister
Tortoise- TNT
Songs: Ohia- Didn't It Rain

I second the albums mentioned above.

I would probably also throw in Television's Marquee Moon, Gang of Four's Entertainment!, and possibly some Joy Division or Talking Heads or Jeff Buckley. I think those and the albums mentioned basically make up the canon for indie music.

As far as modern albums go, (and I realize some people are probably getting tired of hearing people laud him) Sufjan Stevens is one of the modern innovators, in that he is one of the few indie artists not recycling the ideas of the other artists mentioned. There are others too, but I can't think to list them.

soulseek definitely does make things case sensitive as far as adding people on your userlist. i don't know if that means there can be a user of the same name with different capitalization, though.

i just got the roosevelt's it's so hard to make a sound in the mail today. i won it in a contest a few weeks back. it's really nice pop rock.

I have the new Broken Social Scene.

Ditto (thanks for your help, but I got it from Arnold).

I am listening to it now.

Ditto.

No ditto on this one. Maybe I'm not listening close enough, and maybe it's a grower, but I don't think much of it on the first listen.

I haven't picked up the new BSS yet, but I need to. I've been too busy trying to get up to speed on Sufjan Stevens, and rounding out my Peter Murphy collection. Mmmmm, Peter Murphy........

Plus, Jacob thinking BSS is carp only makes me want to get it more, since Jacob is an elitist snob.

If you don't like BSS, then why should I trust your judgement on the Roosevelts?

I gave it that score because I made it the whole way through the album. It was a fun listen. Maybe I was a little biased because Jamie and Heather frequent Decapolis, but I actually was pleasantly surprised. The last Roosevelts album sucked; this was tolerable.
