  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

boy, i didn't know people were that critical. i mean, it's not a great name, but it's not that bad either. (except that the first time i heard people talking about the band, i was a little confused and thought they were literally talking about tv shows being aired on the radio...maybe i shouldn't admit that...) anyway. i like them fairly well. they're not one of those bands that i listen to all the time, but their album makes for a nice listen every now and then.

This is the Indie thread, part of being indie is being terribly pretentious and overly-critical.

this is true. i think i more meant my statement in regard to tv on the radio's band name than in general. because i just don't see how people could think it was that awful. oh well.

It could be the pretentious English major in me, but I really love their songwriting - lyrics, instrumentation, delivery. It's like reading a book and listening to music at the same time. I've been listening to Picaresque alot lately. I think they did a great job with it.

I'm planning on buying several cds the next time I'm out (some of them are long overdue):

"Keep It Like A Secret" -- Built To Spill
"Perfect From Now On" -- Built To Spill
"Surfer Rosa" -- The Pixies
"Seven Swans" -- Sufjan Stevens
"Greetings From Michigan" -- Sufjan Stevens

I'm also looking to pick up another Decemberists album. Any suggestions about that, or other general suggestions? Jordan, I think you mentioned Songs: Ohia in another thread. What do they sound like? What album by them would you recommend?

I have several songs off of Picaresque. Is that on the same level as "Castaways and Cutouts"?
