  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It was one of my favorite albums of last year. I think most of the songs are good in and of themselves and they are even better in the context of the album as a whole. That said, it's not my favorite Modest Mouse album. I'm not really sure what my favorite album is, as I haven't heard all of their early stuff. But I guess if I had to choose, I'd say Moon & Antartica.

I think people were too tough on it. Brock admitted in an interview when they were starting to record it that he wanted to do a poppier album, which Good News was. "The Moon and Antarctica" is probably my favorite as well, but I think "Lonesome Crowded West" and "Building Nothing Out of Something" are incredible, and I like "Sad Sappy Sucker" more than most. :)

I haven't heard "Building Nothing Out of Something" or "Sad Sappy Sucker". At least, I don't think I have. I'll have to check them out. I've heard good things about BNOOS.

Building Nothing Out of Something contains some great tracks: "Baby Blue Sedan", "Broke", "All Night Diner", "Never Ending Math Equation", and "Other People's Lives" to name a few. Sad Sappy Sucker was their earliest recording that wasn't released until a few years back. It's a little more off the wall, containing :30 songs and low production recordings, but it also has some songs that I really enjoy. :)

That's the most common complaint I hear about Dan Smith. To each his own I guess, I think his voice matches the music pretty well. I don't really think the vocals are what make Danielson though. Especially with "Brother:Son", his last album, I think that was one of the few cds I've bought recently that challenged me or made me think spiritually. With all the shallow lyrics and songs out there being made by Christians, it is somewhat refreshing to hear something that is good art and good theology.
I think I'm gonna give it another try.

Is "On Avery Island" worth getting?

Honestly, no. It's a poor album, IMO. There are a few good songs ("Song Against Sex" being the best) but nothing that remotely hints at the genius of the next one.

Hmm...that's peculiar.

It really is. I was shocked at how bad it was, actually; "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" is such unmitigated brilliance from start to finish that it's hard to believe that they could do anything so mediocre as "On Avery Island."

haha, the first time i saw a picture of joanna newsom & read an interview with her, i was sort of surprised at how normal she looked and sounded. like, devendra banhart fit the bill (looking and interviewing as one might expect!), but joanna newsom caught me off guard.

Starflyer 59 is the best.

But nobody's heard of them.

So they (and most likely this post) will be disregarded.
Many of the artists listed here are far more obscure than Starflyer. In fact, Starflyer was on the front page of PureVolume for a while not long ago.

I wouldn't say they're the best, but I do love much of what Jason Martin puts out. Although, I haven't been too impressed with some of the most recent stuff he has released (TVVSV is alright, but it is somewhat predictable; I'm also not really sure what he was thinking with IATPB. I just wish he would take the ideas behind "Old" and "Leave Here A Stranger" and build on them rather than releasing very similar songs over and over).

phil,

you listed Broken Social Scene. YES!

you are my new best friend. hello, new best friend.
I bought one of their cds the other day and it was horrid... wretched. Like, I totally can't believe how boring it was.

But then, when I've got stuff like The Residents to listen to, everything else just gathers dust by the roadside.

Really? Which album was it? You Forgot It In People was one of the better albums of 2003 in my opinion. I think they released an EP or something last year that I heard was not nearly as good, and they also have some older stuff as well. I'm not really familiar with too much aside from YFIIP, but I really like that album.
