  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

How about we talk about other things Indie too, like films! What are some of your favourite 'indie' films? And also importantly, what constitutes an 'indie' film? Anything not out of Hollywood?
An Indie film is one that's not produced by a major studio, though some are eventually distributed by a major studio..so, I guess that's what an indie film is. Million Dollar Baby was an indie film: it was financed independently, and WB picked it up later. The Passion Of The Christ was another Indie film. Indie film snobs usually disagree with this, arguing that they're not independent in "spirit". They're sorta right...like the Noir purists are probably right about Film Noir starting with The Maltese Falcon and ending with Welles' Touch Of Evil.

And Garden State was a good film, just good. It's very overrated. IMO, the best film last year was Maria Full Of Grace.
On the Outs and Down To The Bone were also great films. Garden State did have an great soundtrack.

I prefer the work of Todd Solondz (Welcome To The Dollhouse, Happiness, Storytelling, Palindromes) and David Gordon Green (George Washington, Undertow). They, and P. T. Anderson are the best american filmmakers right now.

I almost forgot. This is the secular music forum.

Peace.

Has anyone else seen "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart"? It's an indie documentary by Sam Jones about the making of Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. The first disc has the film itself, the second disc has footage of Jeff Tweedy and Wilco playing a bunch of rare songs. I really like it. There was so much drama involved in the making of that album (label dropping them, Jay Bennett getting fired, finding a new label, Tweedy's health problems); sometimes real life stuff is more interesting than scripted films.

I heard a rumor that Broken Social Scene is set to release a two-disc album this fall. I'm pretty excited about that.
I heard the same... I've seen them live a couple times in the last year, and their new songs sound absolutely brilliant.

Ever heard of Lali Puna? I got some songs from her albums Faking The Books and Tricoder. Great stuff.

Yeah, they're great in a Stereolab kinda way. Actually, pretty much everything on the Morr Music label is great.

MODEST MOUSE!!! (although im not sure if they're still considered indy)

I wouldn't see why they would be anything other than that. "Float On" is a good poppy song, but it's just as indie as "Do You Realize?" by the Flaming Lips. I'm hoping their next album is very different from Good News though.

^In addition to that, Brock's lyrics are still far from mainstream. For example:

Satin in a Coffin said:
You were laying on the carpet
like you're satin in a coffin.
You said, "Do you believe what you're sayin'?"
Yeah right now, but not that often.

Are you dead or are you sleepin'?
Are you dead or are you sleepin'?
Are you dead or are you sleepin'?
God I sure hope you are dead.

Well you disappeared so often
like you dissolved into coffee.
Are you here right now
or are there probably fossils under your meat?

Or for an example from one of their hits:

Ocean Breathes Salty said:
Well that is that and this is this.
Will you tell me what you saw and I'll tell you what you missed,
when the ocean met the sky.
You missed when time and life shook hands and said goodbye.
When the earth folded on itself.
And said "Good luck, for your sake I hope heaven and hell
are really there, but I wouldn't hold my breath."
You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste death?
You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste death?

...

You wasted life why wouldn't you waste the afterlife?
