It is true that tongues is just one of the portfolio of gifts and abilities that come with the Holy Spirit living in us. The power of God is accepted by faith. God has already given us the power we need. It was handed to the church on the Day of Pentecost. All you have to do is to receive it. If you don't believe that you don't have any power, then you will not; and it will be because of your unbelief. Conversely, if you believe the promises of God's word, then the power is yours to use as the Spirit directs.

The usefulness of the gift of tongues is in allowing the Holy Spirit to pray through you the most appropriate prayers that can help your weaknesses and to put in in the place where you can get revelation from God to understand His word more perfectly.

The gift of tongues is not just an addon. The devil would love to convince you that it is just something to babble just to make you feel good. But once a Christian discovers what the gift of tongues is really used for, and how powerful it is to use, then the devil trembles with fear. No wonder he tries to convince people that the gift of tongues is not really needed. He knows it is absolutely essential for Christians to have power with God. But once Christians have power with God, it signals his defeat. So the more people he deceives into doubting it and arguing about it the better.

God does not want us to argue about the gift of tongues, or to doubt its value to every Christian, but He wants us to USE it!

I agree with you regarding the gift of Tongues. I think the OP was alluding to what the Baptism of the HS is all about. That would, in my opinion, be the empowering and equipping of a person. As you said tongues is, but one gift of many. I see tongues as being a gateway or introduction to the power of the HS.

The question one should ask of themselves is: am I only manifesting a gift of the HS by itself and not allowing God's power to work in me? In my own life my desire is to be empowered by, and connected to God by His HS.

The Lord gives His people whatever gifts they need . If they don't have a particular gift , they don't need it .
