Hannukah post-dates Christ by about 50 years.
Really? Can you please give us some references? The reason that I ask is because I have heard and read differently in the past. I just did a quick Google search for "First Hanukkah" and got some very different time frames. Up to 150 years B.C.
Also Bible Background Commentary, Bible Knowledge Commentary, Life Application Concise New Testament Commentary and a couple of others that I have tell us that the feast mentioned in John 10:22 is actually what would later be called Hanukkah, which would throw into question the date of 50 years after Christ. Adam Clarke's Commentary tells us that the feast is in commemoration of the cleansing of the temple also.
God Bless,
Rick

Oh, no, not again! We go through the same discussion every December.

The Feast of the Dedication is not the same thing as Hannukah, although Gentiles often mistake the two. The Feast of the Dedication was a celebration of the events of 1 Kings 8, at least according to the rabbi I studied ancient Judaic history from and the books by Jewish authors we used in class.

Hannukah is the celebration of the reoccupation of the destroyed temple in the Maccabean revolt, around 160 BC. But it was not celebrated as a holiday until after the final destruction of the temple in 70 AD. It was celebrated as a community event, when Jewish community leaders would light candles on the anniversary of the reoccupation, not for 8 days, but only one night, to remind the people that the temple had been destroyed before and the Lord had rebuilt it. And even this celebration died out after less than a century and found a rebirth only during the general Judaic revival of the 19th century, where it once again was celebrated not as a time of miracles, but as a reminder that God would be faithful to the Jewish people. It was celebrated by Jewish communities who were Zionists. To differentiate it from the celebration of Christmas, which often coincides with Hanukkah, the festival is celebrated for 8 nights, the exact length of time the oil found in the temple miraculously burned after the Maccabean revolt. Today, the promise of the rebuilding of the temple is downplayed while the miracle of the oil is upplayed.

The festival of Hanukkah as we know it today was unknown during Jesus's time.

Did your rabbi tell you something different?

I'm sorry if I have offended you. I have not been here in Decembers past.
But I ask you again, do you have any references for me to look at and further understand your point of view? What texts did your Rabbi use? It is hard to study your view when all you do is make snide remarks such as "Did your Rabbi teach you something else?". Forgive me for not having the money to afford a better education. Even a Bible that me and you debated earlier "The Message" calls it Hanukkah. So do you still stand by your argument that The Message is an accurate Bible? Forget the request for further study material.
My time here was short, but I feel it is best that I move off of web based discussion boards for study.
Love all of you,
Rick

Sheesh. Education is a bad thing around here I guess.

I never said the Message is an accurate Bible, I said that the Message is a good tool to help round out a person's understanding of a difficult passage. It shouldn't be used as a study Bible, I have said that all along. It's a reading book meant to make the Bible more fun and interesting to read. With any Bible, you have to study to make sure your understanding of it is consistent with the true meaning.

I'm really really sorry if I offended you. Please don't leave over this. I keep forgetting that knowledge isn't a desirable trait on forum boards.

And the remark about your rabbi wasn't meant to be snide. Lots of Christians study ancient Judaism with a rabbi or at a rabbinical school so they can get info straight from the source, not through the filter of what evangelical Christianity wants things to be.

I'm sure you didn't mean that as a racial slur.

My Jewish roommate in college had blond hair and blue eyes. She didn't have any of the physical traits you would associate with Jewish heritage.

Nope, actually that comes from an experience with a Messianic Jew I knew of many years ago. He was a preacher down in the Frederick MD area (that was a lot of years ago now that I think of it) and came up to do a lecture at a Christian Singles group I was part of. Later I invited him to speak at our church's Wed nite service. While he was speaking he asked the congregation about why they thought he was Jewish. Our pastor said "you have a big nose" and the MJ laughed out loud (and everyone else sorta nervously laughed) and said yes, and what else? And there were all the descripts and then his dress, which was dark and he had the little strips of cloth, I forget what they are called.

He went on to explain that while there were some racial & cultural issues, they weren't what made him a Jew...sorta went from there. He was really good, called himself a "Completed Jew".

It was interesting, I remember something, seems like it was him. He was asked how he celebrated Christmas, since he was accustomed to Hannukah (which was still celebrated I think) and he said (seems like it was him) he had a small cradle in which he placed a cross--instead of the traditional tree...

I like the idea of a cross at the manger.

A couple years ago, my sister, the Christian pagan, and I were shopping in the trim the tree department at a big store, and one of the trees had some cross shaped ornaments on it, which I thought was pretty neat.

My sister said that she hates to see a cross at Christmas time, because Christmas is about His birth and the cross makes a mockery of the nativity.

I said that the cross is the whole reason Christ was born, there was no reason for him to be born at all if not for the cross.

She got mad and said, "Why do you have to ruin Christmas with that religious stuff?"

Imagine the nerve of me! Thinking that a holiday with Christ in it's name ought to have something to do with Christ!

I did a little research and actually from a historical standpoint the best scholarly evidence would have been that the Jewish people would have celebrated the Macabeeian miracle of the the oil shortly after it happened durring the feast of dedication (which is what Hanukkah means BTW)

But it probably was not celebrated like folks do it today in every home etc it was more of a community type thing which we see Jesus doing in John Ch 10

BESIDES IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A LITTLE JOKE!!!!

I found this on spoof of the old "Santa is evil" website:

Here comes Santa Claus!. . .
What a beautiful sight.
All is merry and bright.
Hang your stockings and say your prayers,
'Cause Santa Claus comes tonight
Jump in bed, cover up your head,
'Cause Santa Claus comes tonight
So let's give thanks to the Lord above
'Cause Santa Claus comes tonight,

I think it's meant to be funny, not serious.

The song is Santa Claus Lane sung by Gene Autry and also Elvis Presley

Well, here comes Santa Claus, here comes Santa Claus,
Riding down Santa Claus Lane.

He'll come around when the chimes ring out
It's Christmas morn again.
Peace on Earth will come to all
If we just follow the light
Let's give thanks to the Lord above,
'Cause Santa Claus comes tonight.
