A quick vote and information panel

Dear Morpheus:

Your questions confused me. They seemed to be yes/no questions but there was no place to check a yes/no answer.

If you were to do an Internet search on the Orthodox-Catholic dialogue, you would find out that it is much more complicated than a simple yes/no vote.

These dialogues and discussions among Bishops and theologians have been going on for years since Vatican II. That's at least 40 years - a long time. It's going to take a lot of prayer and meaningful discussions.

Your sister in Christ our God,
Elizabeth

Good morning! My answers won't convey any "warm fuzzies of ecumenism", but this does NOT mean that I am feeling hostile toward the original poster, nor toward Roman Catholics as a group of people. I'm just replying as a run-of-the-mill Orthodox Christian.

No, I do not think that the Roman Catholic Church, as an organization, ever will decide to return to Orthodox Christianity because it would require them to reject their many, accumulated errors of theology and practice. The Papacy would cease to exist, because no "job" would exist that claims universal authority vested in one person. Only individual Roman/Eastern Catholics will convert.

No, I do not want to leave the faith in order to join -- not "reunite with" -- a foreign body.

Although I checked the box indicating that I want to unite with the Holy See, I feel I must explain what I mean by that.

I do not mean that I wish to become a Roman Catholic as things stand right now.

What I mean is that I pray for all those who hold the Apostolic Faith to be reunited in the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church. I also believe that the Church would be better off if all of the historic patriarchates were restored to her fold, including and especially the Apostolic See of St. Peter.

As I have said before, I will not argue with Roman Catholics on this web site, as I believe that is harmful to the many lost and confused persons who visit here.

I will also not bring railing accusations against the Pope of Rome, since I certainly am not worthy to do so and it would serve no good purpose.

I'm not casting a vote. (Which is typical for me.:) )
I agree with Jeff and Orthodox6 on this one. I don't know the hearts of the Catholic authorities, especially the Pope to ever say whether a reunion could take place. All things are possible with God. And as I am learning more about the two churches...it seems the gulf between us has only enlarged over the past 200 years or so. It will take a very long time to heal.

As you can see, I am technically RC. But in my heart I am Orthodox and do believe that it is the true Church. Unfortunately I have not made that final step...coming close a couple of times though.
In my humble opinion I think it would take a great miracle for the two Churches to reunite. I lived in Greece for some time in a monastery and I sensed the anger and bitterness towards the RC Church.(although I was most at home there and very much welcomed)...But most importantly I think that it is two totally different mindsets...especially in the approach to theology. How would the two Churches ever come into agreement about all the dogmas and additions of the Catholic Church??...the apparitions of the Virgin Mary, original sin, the Caltholic saints with stigmatas, etc.

Anyway, I want to thank all of you for the information you have provided on these threads, especially regarding papal infallibilityand the history of the Bishop of Rome. Maximus, I really admire your approach and it has been most helpful.. I just had a hard time understanding that if the Bishop of Rome was meant to be infallible then wouldn't that have been declared in the early Church and not so much later??? There were 5 Patriarchates and one separated itself from the rest. Oh well, just a few thoughts. Blessings and prayers to all.

Agapatos -

I don't regard the Pope as infallible. Even St. Peter was not infallible (and yes, I understand that doctrine).

The Church as a whole is infallible in the Deposit of Faith, which is unchanging.

I have read a lot from both Orthodox and Roman Catholics, and, although there are differences between us, I don't see the great gulf that others see. There are differences in rite and practice, but the really significant differences are few in my opinion.

If God wishes to reunite us, nothing will stop it. If He does not, then nothing will promote it.

May He bring all true Christians into His One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church.

Grant it, oh Lord!

Thx guys for all the feedback..i was happy that no one got offended..i see that there is a great matter of friendship, love and prayer that is needed if we are to come as one like we were before the schism in 1054.

After my prayers i will ask God to re-unite our bodies as one under His Church, and that we may never stray from one anothers again.

:D Love ya guys :D
