If you're talking about a cup that Christ used at the last supper then it obviously did exist. According to the legend that same cup was used to catch Christ's blood at the Cross. This I highly doubt as there is no Biblical evedince for it.

As for the rest of the legend about the cup providing eternal life it is merely that a legend. The only eternal life is in the next life for those who are in Christ.

I will allow that there does/did exist a cup that Jesus used at the Last Supper. But that is as much truth in this legend as there is.

Makes for a nice fairy tale though. (As well as a plot device for an Indiana Jones movie.)

Actually, if you really want to get technical, according to legend, Joseph of Arimathea brought the Holy Grail with him when he migrated to England. Also, the Grail was one of three holy Christian relics in the legends. One was the Grail, the second was the Spear of Longinus, the spear used by a Roman centurion to pierce the side of Christ, and the third relic was Joseph of Arimathea himself, preserved and stored in a castle!!! LOL :D

Anyways, if you're really interested in the Holy Grail and it's surrounding legends, you should read Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte D'Arthur, the Keith Baines rendition, in paperback. I would also recommend that you gain an elementary understanding of the Catholic liturgical calendar, considering the stories are centered around this type of timeframe. It also wouldn't hurt to study a little on Catholic belief. ;)

After seeing the movie Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, my sister, this guy my sister's age in our church, and myself all decided we were going to go in search of the Holy Grail.

That book you mentioned sounds pretty interesting humblejoe. I might just pick myself up a copy to read. :)

The Holy Grail (if that's what it really is) is kept in a glass display case inside the Cathedral of Valencia in Spain.

I'm assuming that you're referring to the cup that Christ used at the last supper. How was it authenticated? In other words. How do they know it's real?

There is no way of "proving" it's the actual cup used by Christ. :)

It has, however, been proven to be of 1st-century manufacture and of a common material used in Roman-occupied oriental countries; the cup is made of carnelian, a red stone similar to chalcedony. An old legend relates that the cup travelled to Rome with the Apostle Peter and was used as a Mass vessel by all the Bishops of Rome down to Pope Sixtus II, and then it was sent to Spain in 258 AD. From there it moved around to various churches and monasteries until it arrived in Valencia in 1424, where it has remained ever since.

Is it the actual "Holy Grail"? Nobody knows for certain.

Does it really matter? No, not really. :) Salvation is based on Christ, not on ancient relics.

I may take back some of the things I've said about you.
Hey, I got a reputation to uphold, you know. Don't canonize me too fast. ;)
Still, that sounds interesting. Archaeology is a passing interest of mine.
You can read about a lot of these relics---the Grail, the Shroud, the True Cross, the Soldier's Lance, etc., in Joan Carroll Cruz' excellent book Relics (ISBN 0-87973-701-8). :)
