“Give me your heart, my son,
And let your eyes delight in my ways.
For a harlot is a deep pit
And an adulterous woman is a narrow well.
Surely she lurks as a robber,
And increases the faithless among men.” (Proverbs 23:26-28 NASB1995)

So many people today who have professed faith in Jesus Christ, and who purportedly have parted from their sins, and who have apparently been joined together with Christ in a holy union, never really parted from their sins. And so they didn’t really unite with Jesus Christ but with a false Christ of a false faith which is also united with the world and with the ungodly in an unholy union which they call “church.” And these all harmonize together in these gatherings of what is called “the church,” but which are not of God.

They go through the motions of religious practice, and they sing their songs, and they listen to their preacher’s sermons, but they have not truly divorced themselves from their sin nor from the world, but they are united with both, all three singing in harmony with one another. So, even though they profess faith in Jesus Christ, and they religiously attend these “church” services, their lives are not much different at all from those who have never made a profession of faith in Jesus Christ, for they all do the same kinds of things.

Now the true church, the body of Christ, still exists, but they appear to be in the minority, at least here in the USA. And the true church, which is of God, is not in harmony with the world and with sinful and immoral practices, for they are all those who have died with Christ to sin and who have been raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in him, no longer to live as slaves to sin, but as slaves to God and to his righteousness. This does not make them perfect, but they who are of the truth are not married anymore to their sins.

So, “the harlot,” in this scenario, is really the false “church” which is a creation of man, which is united in marriage to the government and to the world, incorporated (combined, merged, united) under the state (the world and the government and the ungodly), which is forbidden by God. And so they have turned “the church” into a marketplace, a place of business, which is also forbidden by God. And they have largely forsaken the right way to follow after the ways of the world, to attract the world to their gatherings.

[Matthew 21:12-13; John 2:13-17; Acts 5:27-32; 2 Corinthians 6:14-18; Philippians 3:18-19; Revelation 2-3; Revelation 13:5-8; Revelation 18:1-5]

And since they are businesses of human flesh, being marketed to the people of the world, they have given way to many of the ways of the world to draw in large crowds of people from the world into their gatherings. And so many of them have now diluted and altered the character of God/Christ, and of his church (the body of Christ), and of his gospel message to make them more palatable and less offensive to the ungodly of the world. And the ungodly are all who are still living in sin who do not obey God, in practice, in lifestyle.

Thus, many professing Christians today are being taught that they don’t have to die to their sins and that they don’t have to obey God, for their teachers have perverted the grace of God into a license for lasciviousness, or sensuality, or immorality, and they deny Jesus Christ as our only Lord and Master (see Jude 1:4). And the result is that we have a very large number of “church goers” who are living in immorality, who are engaged regularly in what is adulterous, faithless, and sensual, while they claim Jesus as Lord.

But the Scriptures teach that if we want to have salvation from sin, and the hope of eternal life with God, we must, by God-persuaded faith in the Lord, die with him to sin, and now walk in obedience to his commands, in practice, by the grace of God, in the power of God. For if sin is still what we practice, and not righteousness and holiness and godly living, in obedience to our Lord, then we don’t know God, we are not born of God, we are not in fellowship with Christ, and we will not inherit eternal life with God.

[Matthew 7:13-14,21-23; Luke 9:23-26; John 1:12-13; John 6:44; John 10:27-30; Acts 26:18; Romans 2:6-8; Romans 6:1-23; Romans 8:1-14; 1 Corinthians 10:1-22; Galatians 5:16-24; Ephesians 2:8-10; Ephesians 4:17-32; Ephesians 5:3-6; Titus 2:11-14; Hebrews 3:1-19; Hebrews 4:1-13; Hebrews 12:1-2; 1 Peter 2:24; 1 John 1:5-10; 1 John 2:3-6; 1 John 3:4-10]

So, please know that the church is the people of God who are in fellowship with Christ by faith in the Lord Jesus via dying with Christ to sin and now living to God and to his righteousness, in obedience to his commands. This doesn’t make us perfect, or mean that we will never fail, but that obedience to God and holy living are what we practice, and not sin. And God is calling his church to come out from all unholy unions with those who are ungodly, immoral, and of the world, who are teaching lies and not the truth.

[Matthew 21:12-13; John 2:13-17; Acts 5:27-32; 2 Corinthians 6:14-18; Philippians 3:18-19; Revelation 2-3; Revelation 13:5-8; Revelation 18:1-5]

Oh, to Be Like Thee, Blessed Redeemer

Lyrics by Thomas O. Chisholm, 1897
Music by W. J. Kirkpatrick, 1897

Oh, to be like Thee! blessèd Redeemer,
This is my constant longing and prayer;
Gladly I’ll forfeit all of earth’s treasures,
Jesus, Thy perfect likeness to wear.

Oh, to be like Thee! full of compassion,
Loving, forgiving, tender and kind,
Helping the helpless, cheering the fainting,
Seeking the wandering sinner to find.

O to be like Thee! lowly in spirit,
Holy and harmless, patient and brave;
Meekly enduring cruel reproaches,
Willing to suffer others to save.

O to be like Thee! while I am pleading,
Pour out Thy Spirit, fill with Thy love;
Make me a temple meet for Thy dwelling,
Fit me for life and Heaven above.

Oh, to be like Thee! Oh, to be like Thee,
Blessèd Redeemer, pure as Thou art;
Come in Thy sweetness, come in Thy fullness;
Stamp Thine own image deep on my heart.
