  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Okay, here's something most of you know. If not, I'm sure you can google this. I was just watching a special on Timoty Treadwell, aka, The Grizzly Man. This guy spent 13 summers on Kodiak Island in Alaska, living amongst grizzlies. He videotaped his exploits, all the way up until the day he died. During his 13th summer, he invited his girlfriend to go with him. When the fall came and his ride showed up to get him, they found he and the girlfriend had been eaten by a bear.

Now, I first read this story in Field & Stream about two years ago, and the first thought in my mind was this guy was an idiot. Grizzlies in the wild are not exactly ideal company to be living among. This guy obviously thought otherwise. Now some environmentalists like to think he was doing a good thing, but most would agree he did more damage than good. I just want to hear what you guys think about this.

An animal is not too interested in killing a human if it doesn't feel intimidated or invaded. If the Grizzlies had come to know him then it is very possible that he could walk among them as long as he kept his place in their society and obeyied the other males.

On his death I read that it was after his flight got canceled and he returned to where he stayied. Most of his known bears were hibernating and a bear that he didn't know attacked them and killed them.

If he was studying them as a professional then he did good which I think he was. If he was proving some point then he is a moron who got what he deserved. Grizzlies are wild animals and all of them are dangerous even a domesticated cat can scratch your face off. I say: respect the animal and hope that it does the same, but don't count on it.

For the first sentence, I wish I could say the same. Except this guy wasn't a professional, and everyone thought he wanted to be a bear. The grizzly that ate him and his girlfriend, just 10 days before he videotaped at a stream. It was an older bear that was trying to survive. The guy crossed an imaginary boundary between grizzlies and humans and he got taught a lesson he'll never live to learn from.

I'd be interested to see if he left any notes behind about his last visit with the Grizzlies. As most know, a grizzly is attracted to scent, and blood is a very big attractor. Women have periods. He invited his girlfriend there for the SUMMER with the grizzlies, which means she likely went through her normal cycle whilst there. He'd never been eaten during all the years prior, so I'm wondering if the new variable (the gf) in the equation was the cause for the attack.

I hope somebody writes a book about this... a factual one, or makes a movie about it. I know you said there was a documentary (right?) but I'd love to see a movie based on facts and investigation. I'm interested to hear more. If I were a betting person, I'd put money on the gf being the cause of the attack, and guess that something about her genetic make up, more specifically her hormones, are what set things off in that direction. Female bears often feel threatened by other female bears. On the other hand, male bears often become violent in the presence of female bears in heat. So, I wouldn't be surprised to hear that it was either a male or a female that killed them. Still... I'd bet on the female.

Two words

Dumb-ass

I got no pity for him. If your dumb enough to mess around with animals that can shred you and they do....cant exactly feel bad for him. I do feel sorry for his girlfriend though, the guy's stupidity got him munched, it shouldnt have claimed her as well

It makes me sad that they had to shoot the bear. I seriously doubt the bear was a risk to anyone else.

Moral of the story: Stay the hell away from grizzly bears if you know what's good for you.

Which is why, if I ever go bear hunting up there, I'm gonna be with two other people. We're all gonna have guns, and we're all gonna have bear spray. I ain't taking no chances.

I never got this idea.

1) Why go hunting?
2) Why hunt dangerous animals?

Is it the adrenaline kick? Is it an ego boost? I just don't get hunting at all. Killing deer with a scope or firing at birds with scatter rounds is... well nothing to brag about. And going up against a cornered wild boar or a bear is just plain stupid. If you want to look down death's jaws why not jump off a plane? Even for meat game is bad since it is too hard.

The guy said his dream was to end up as bear poop. He was an idiot, though, because he wouldn't listen when numerous people told him that if he gets eaten, the bear will be killed.

Was the bear caught with his pants down? Most want a castle in the sky----this guy wanted to be a castle on the ground.....:D

I feel sorry for the bear.

It's obviously not an ego boost, if he "ain't taking no chances." If one doesn't hunt dangerous animals for the thrill of danger, then why at all?

Wanting to go face to face with an animal that can kill you is understandable; it's an adrenaline rush like skydiving. Doing it while insisting on removing every element of danger doesn't make any sense to me. If fangs and claws have been rendered useless against the almighty hand of Man, why bother killing the animal who owns them?

It's part of the way I was raised. Hunting dangerous animals is an adrenaline rush, but you make sure you don't go out there unprepared. Even deer hunting is dangerous. Bucks ain't Bambi. I've seen too many videos of buck fighting, and it aint' pretty. It's also great to be outdoors with nature, but I know where my boundaries are in order to be safe. If I cross that line, I better make sure I know what I'm doing though.

In college, I shared an apartment with a group of young people, one of whom was a young man from a hunting family in Pa. He used to bring over game to cook, like venison, which was good. One time he brought in some bear meat, which was nastiest-smelling and tasting meat. Beyond gamey.

I believe if one is going to hunt, the animal should not be mounted, but eaten and used in every way. Shooting lions and elephants is not honorable hunting - it's thrill to kill.

On Timothy Tredwell's end, he was a misguided soul who meant well, but unfortunately his lack of common sense also brought another innocent soul to her death, his girlfriend. I had read the Vanity Fair article about him, and it haunted me for days. The recount of the audio from the video camera, which was on while Tredwell and his girlfriend were attacked and eaten was primal and fearful - the writer described the final moments after the attack was under way, in which the screams and howls of the man, woman and bear all sounded alike, like they were one.

Bear spray? Whats that? Is that kind like steak sauce you spray over yourself so the bear eats you quicker and you dont suffer?

So's smashing yourself in the face with a hammer, doesnt mean either one of them is a good thing to do

Bear spray is just like pepper spray, just a bit more potent. It's non-lethal and will definitely rid you of bear problems. If you want to check it out, go to www.cabelas.com and look it up.

Well there christianmarine, I tend to see the hunting and killing of animals just for the "rush" barbaric. I know that it plugs into some atavastic impulse in males that has been repressed in our society, the desire to hunt and kill. However, the difference is that our ancestors needed to hunt and kill and had great reverence for the creature killed knowing that it was giving its life so that they might live.

Modern hunters are not analogous to our ancestors who needed to kill to survive, didn't have high powered rifles, didn't have modern camo and weren't carrying "Bear be Gone."

I don't like seeing hunters get hurt, but all creatures have the right of self defense when threatened. At least the Grizzly Man had the best, though misguided, intentions and loved these creatures. Hunters see these beautiful creatures as intrinsically valueless save in terms of either the resource they represent or as a form of IMO twisted entertainment that allow for a vicarious thrill at the expense of another living being.

)o( Blessed Be,

Chris
