I am from the U.S but I believe George Whitefield is the greatest Brit ever.
Who on earth is George Whitefield????

I don't know who I would vote for. Most of them seem great until you exam their personal lives, then they don't seem quite so great after all.

Only one of the greatest preachers ever to come out of England. He was a very effective evangelist and would hold people spell bound by his open air services across the country. You could hear a pin drop in a crowd of 20,000. He went to America and was part of the "great awakening" along side Jonathan Edwards.

Truly worthy of hero status and a bold servant of God.

A Calvinst, sounds like a bundle of laughs, LOL!!!!!

He sounds like a precursor to those awful TV evangelists they have in the US! I have never rated evangelists highly, they hype the audience up into making a quasi committment to God which probably lasts as long as it takes for the euphoria to die down. If I sound bitter about these people it is because I sat through far too many evangelistic campaigns as a child, and one well known American TV evangelist tried to rip off my elderly and gullible great aunt!!

I think you will find the tv "Evangelists" of the present day to be very far removed from those of yesteryear who by contrast never appealed for money or promoted themselves. People Like Evan Roberts who was instrumental in starting the Welsh revival of 1904 in which thousands came under conviction of sin and turned to Christ in repentance.
Or the Rev Duncan Campbell who prayed for revival in the Scottish hebrides. People fell to the ground crying to God for mercy while the local dance hall emptied as the spirit of God fell on those islands and hundreds turned to Christ, William M'Cullough of Cambuslang whos preaching was responsible for over 30,000 souls turning to Christ. DL Moody and Sankey were also instrumental in revivals. The two common factors with all these men was that none of them claimed the glory for the mass conversions under their ministries and they were all men of prayer.

Here here!

I agree it's hard to choose one overall... I wouldn't like to start to choose...

Oworm, of course you are entitled to your opinion of these people past and present. You description of people falling on the ground crying for mercy does absolutely nothing to endear me to evangelists, quite the opposite in fact! To be honest people having a pleasant time in a dance hall is a much better spectacle imo!

And thats exactly how they would wish you to respond since they were only mouthpieces for God. What caused people to fall on the ground was nothing less than the spirit of God convicting people of sin and their need of a saviour.

Anyway ...............We digress from the theme of this thread !!! Lets get back on topic eh?

I would like to nominate Princess Diana of Wales who did so much to campaign for victims of landmines and for the banning of same as weapons of war!!

We will have to agree to differ over that one, I would have put it down to mass hysteria myself!

How about John Wesley? And I would give a shout out for C. S. Lewis
Ah yes of course .......................Oh and i forgot Dr Martin Lloyd Jones whos expository preaching at Westminster chapel in London blazed a trail many were to follow................. Ive read quite a few of his sermons and am currently reading his rendering of 2 Peter. He certainly pulled no punches in his delivery:eek:

Sir Elton John-I say you overthrow the Windsors and install him as your king (I don't know how succession would work since he's gay and doesn't have any children LOL)!

The man is a musical genius.

Good call. I'd go for Wilberforce too.
