The Bible Says

And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the alter of incense.

And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

But the angel said unto him, Fear not Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.

And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.

Luke 1 verse 11

This is how the Christmas story begins with an angel appearing to Zacharias. I love Luke's Gospel. Of all the gospels it deals in the most detail of the birth and early life of Jesus.

I hope that a study of Luke starting with the Christmas story will bring edification to all those who join in this Bible study.

I hope to go slowly through Luke and not miss out any major detail or event in the life of Jesus.

Whosoever will may come and join in this detailed study of the Gospel according to St Luke.

Good Morning Brother agamemnonoftroy

I pray this study in Luke's gospel will be blessed with the anointing of the Holy Ghost and may many Christians come and share their thoughts and words. In Jesus name we pray, amen.

The Bible Says

And behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words.

Luke 1 verse 20

Zacharias and his wife Elizabeth were old and he found it hard to believe they could have a baby son. Because Zacharias doubted the word of the angel he was struck dumb until the day John the Baptist was born.

Thank you for sharing this brother agamemnonoftroy.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible
Because thou believest not ... - This was both a sign and a judgment - a sign that he had come from God, and that the thing would be fulfilled: and a judgment for not giving credit to what he had said. There is no sin in the sight of God more aggravated than unbelief. When God speaks; man should believe; nor can he that "will not" believe escape punishment. God speaks only truth, and we should believe Him. God speaks only what is for our good, and it is right that we should suffer if we do not credit what He says.

Luke 1 verse 26 The Annunciation

And after those days his wife Elizabeth conceceived and hid herself away five months.

And in the sixth month the angle Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.

Luke 1 verse 26

So Elisabeth had been with child for five months when the Angel Gabriel appeared unto Mary. This means that Elizabeth and Mary would be with child at the same time. This would make John the Baptist about five months older than Jesus.

And the angel came in unto her and said,

Hail, thou that art hightly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou amoung women.

Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring froth a son and shalt call his name Jesus.

He shall be great: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: and he shall reign in the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

Luke 1 verse 28

Mary is told by the angel Gabriel that she is to have a son while still being a virgin and that she was to call him Jesus, and that Jesus was to be a peron of great power.

The Magnificat

And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,
And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savour,
For he had regarded the low estate of his handmaiden:
For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blesssed.

Luke 1 verse 46

This was a speech made by Mary to her cousin Elisabeth.

The Benedictus

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel;
For he hath visited and redeemed his people,
And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us
In the house of his servant David.

Luke 1 verse 68

Zacharias had been struck dumb since hearing he was to have a son called John. But when the baby was born his voice came back and he burst into song.

And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.

And all went to be taxed, every one unto his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethleham, to be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

Luke 2 verse 1

This was the reason that Joseph brought Mary from Nazareth unto Bethlehem.
