Lately, I've been thinking about the Fall of Man, the Fall of the World, and the Fall of Satan. I think that I might have finally got a theological handle on the whole affair. Stick with me... This is just a theory, and it gets a bit sticky at times.
When God created the universe, he did so with a plan in mind. Everything was perfect, following predictable patterns put in place by the Father. There was nothing unpredictable because all the universe worked in harmony with the perfect plan of God...
Except, there was one problem. God knew about the Fall of man. Not only did he know, but he had already committed Himself to solve the whole Sin problem. The biggest problem was the Sin itself. Sin, in acting against the will of God, acts against all the right things in the universe. It is, essentially, an antithetical force against the proper working of things... An all-encompassing entropy that draws the entirity of Creation toward a fiery destruction. Well, of course God, being all Just and Merciful and Loving, saw fit to make a New Heaven and New Earth for his favorite creations, but that is beside the point.
God knew that Sorrow and Pain and Destruction would enter the world because of his desire for fellowship... He understood also that without humanity, he was essentially a bullet without a gun. Love cannot be expended on something that doesn't love back. It is a reciprocal relationship. So, Man was created, and we are where we are today.
Now, the question is, where did Satan get the idea that he could possibly go head to head with the God of the Universe? Well, I think the only real answer to that lies in the fact that God is of one nature: Love. He is Light, and no Darkness can dwell within him... And yet, Mankind would rebel, and God would feel Sorrow for it. Sorrow, and maybe even guilt. Now, I believe that He absolved that through Jesus Christ, but could that momentary feeling of weakness been the indictment that Lucifer needed to make his play for power? After all, 1/3 of the Host went with the Devil as he fell... He had to have had a more compelling reason than simply "I am pretty."
This is an idea I have been kicking around in my head for a while. I would love to hear ideas about what it means. By no means am I purporting this top be fact; It is pure conjecture, meant to hopefully make us more conscious of our own sin and ways to avoid it. I would be grateful for your input.
