Actually the way it works is that the spaceship remains stationary but the space enveloping it moves. It compresses space in front and decompresses it in the rear. Indeed it would but they are working on it. Last I heard was that they theoretically halved the required energy.
Wouldn't that require like, unimaginably huge amounts of energy?
Like all similar schemes, it falls foul of the need for a field with negative energy density.
Not exactly as with a warp drive you are essentially remaining stationary and the space around you is moving.You can never exceed the speed of light for one simple reason. As you accelerate the atoms in your clock gain energy and they oscillate at a different rate, so no matter how fast you are actually going, light will always appear to move at the speed of c. Even if you are in reality exceeding that speed to an outside observer.
