  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Suilaid, elen síla lumenn' omentielvo.
I've been busy working lately, so I haven't been able to come here as often as I'd like, but I am getting a bit of money so that's good.

random elvish quotes:
Caro naid dithin na veleth veleg. ..... Do small things with great love.
No i brestanneth anírach tírad vi amar. ..... Be the change you wish to see in the world.

Sílo Anor bo men lín. (May the sun shine on your road.)
Navaer! (Farewell!)

Since there really is no other place, and I know all of you, I figure that I will tell you here.

A companion of mine and I have formed a company that creates custom chain mail (chainmail, chain maille, maille, however you desire to say it) pieces. Jewelry, clothing, accesories, and the like. The are quite inexpensive (much less than something you would find on the internet). Because they are custom pieces, we can make virtually anything. Honestly, anything. If you are interested, PM me or just post here in this thread. The design process costs nothing. They make great gifts, too!

That's interesting Wormie, especially the last one. Is that word for farewell Quenya or Sindarin?
I'm guessing it's Sindarin. I believe the Quenya equivalent is Namárië. (one time I'm very glad to have a Spanish keyboard! Makes typing Elvish so much easier)

Oh, I'm sure it does. For me, I have to use the American keyboard's ALT key and the number pad. It's a bother, though after looking at the list of codes and their equivalent letters for a while (and using them), you get used to it.

I have an idea. Who wants to help translate the song "Silent Night" into Quenya? It would be fun, since we are coming up on the holiday season.

Dear Friends,
I have begun a very special project, but I need some help. My project is
to make a vest out of soda can tabs. However, this will require many,
many tabs. Thus, I would ask this: Is anyone willing to help me collect
tabs and then send them to me? I need hundreds of them, so every little
bit counts. They can be the plain silver or colored. They can be from
soda cans, energy drinks, beer cans, anything. I really appreciate
anyone willing to help. Contact me if you are willing to assist!
Thank you all so much!
Sincerely,
Morvaltur

Any one know of a elvish to English translator? I know of one of drow.
There really are not any translators, not like you would find a German to English translation program, etc. For Elvish, you just have to learn it and do it yourself, or get someone else who knows how to do it for you. Hope that helps.

Good guess It is indeed sindarin, which is more my specialty (than quenya). It's a lot less formal, and more "everyday" language (if elvish language can be used everyday ).

Hi Wolfman544
*Shrugs* I don't really specialize in either. I just knew that Namárië is Quenya, so I assumed that that one had to be Sindarin.

Hi Wolfman544
Wouldn't that be interesting now? To have a place where Sindarin was spoken as a day to day common tongue?

Have you ever heard of Ardalambion, my friend? Google search it, I'm not sure of the URL. There you may find everything from courses to dictionaries.

Wow that looks great! I think I did find it once, a couple of years ago, and then could never find it again because I didn't remember the name. Thanks! I'll have a better look when I'm less tired. Is it really possible to get really good at the language? I think I'm quite good with languages, I do well in French at school.

Also, another random discussion point for everyone: According to your knowledge of Tolkien's languages, is the Elvish spoken in the LOTR films accurate?

*Nods* I know. I wish I could go to such a land so that I could learn the language, 'cause there's really no substitute for actually speaking a language day in and day out.

Well, it is more or less possible. These tongues are not like Klingon. They are not as developed. You can learn grammar and such, but the dictionaries are a bit limited.
As for the films, yes, the Elvish was more or less correct. It was the movies themselves that were not so much correct. Many mistakes.

This is true. I have taken three years of Spanish and can not speak it nearly as well as those of my friends who live on dairies and talk with the Hispanic workers. I know that is not total emersion, but it is akin to it.
