  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Pastor Don, I think you've brought up an important topic.

I think the consumerist/business mentality of our country is a big problem with churches. We treat churches like a business where we are supposed to fulfill the desires of consumers rather than teach them God's desires for their lives.

This comes into the "worship wars" and church business style practices too.

My thought is that the church should seek to transform society, instead of society transforming the church. Yes, I am a social conservative. I believe that the Methodist church should continue to stand for marriage as being between as a man and a woman and reaffirm that as part of official doctrine.

I've thought about this issue, and I'd probably leave the Methodist Church if it decides to "follow the crowd" and change the language in the Book of Discipline and go down the road of compromise like the PCUSA has.

So, can I see the denomination splitting over something like this? Yes.

Loving people as people is one thing, but I don't think the church should kow-tow to political correctness.
