  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Who do Catholics consider the elect? This question came up the other day, and while I thought I understood it, I wasn't able to present it very clearly. Any ideas?
All those who are saved in the end are the 'elect' in Christ; anyone who is saved is so by the gift of God. Those who reject this are the reprobates. They are not saved due to their sin and non-repentance.

The difference in our view and Calvin’s view is that we believe have a choice and that God gives all men a way of salvation but we can reject this if we so desire, they believe God chooses who will accept Him and who will remain as they are- damned and not of God.

I think the majority of Catholics will agree that Bush was elected fair and square. There's only a small minority who thinks that Kerry actually won.

;)
Susan Surandon (sp?) you know the actress- says that the election was rigged. Since when just because you act for a living you can speak as if you have some kind of authority on political matters?

There is just no end to things people will say when they are desperate Sandy.
Just ignore it, and pray for her.

Amen, brother, amen. Surely her derailment guilt is great if she is resorting to projecting that guilt onto me. Lord have mercy. :crossrc:

/me shakes her head sadly...

I'm Orthodox, but I would like to reply, if I may. A very wise man once said: "We know where the Church is, but we do not know where it ISN'T. The Holy Spirit goes where He wills..."

Be gentle with me, I am trying to express this in a way that will not anger either Orthodox or Catholic, for we are brethren in Christ and I believe it grieves the Theotokos when we hurt each other...

Prior to the Great Schism, all Christians were part of the "One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church". Today, both Orthodox and Catholics lay claim to being "THE Church". I will not get into this theological minefield: I believe that in Heaven, this schism will be healed and that ALL sincere and repentant Christians will be part of God's Holy Church.

Those loving and serving Christ are the Elect. I have no guarantee of being one of the Elect, I can only pray to be made worthy by God's grace to be in Heaven for eternity with Christ my Savior. I desperately do not wish to EVER cause pain to my fellow Christians, as I do not wish to alienate those with whom I will most likely be sharing eternity.

LOL : I do not want to be standing in front of the Judgment Seat of God and have geocajun or nyj or TLF all upset with me.

Although there my be points of friction that exist, we are called as Christians to love one another. The scriptures tell us if we are coming to make an offering to God and we have something against our brother, to put down the offering and go make peace with our brother, for that is what pleases God.

I believe that we can each defend the Church and our Faith while lovingly reaching out to one another. I am so pleased to see the kindness and consideration that allow Orthodox & Catholics to work together in some of the General Forums to defend the Sacraments. It is heartening.

I apologize for my ramble, and I humbly apologize for butting in if it was not OK with you that I do so...

I would say all of those in Heaven are the elect and all of those who will be in Heaven are the elect. God knows who they are.

It is an interesting question Carrie, because, from the Biblical view, the elect are chosen. It's also Bibical that man makes choices that can determine eternal fate. So, I think this one is somewhat of a mystery. At least to my feeble mind. :)
