Right, but we're not talking about "how we experience it". We're talking about how it actually is.
I guess all it shows is that there is range for confusion when describing flatness on a curved surface. But since both definitions are so easy to clarify, and yet both reasonable, I can't imagine a need for people to get insulting about the definition.I encourage open discussion.

You're playing these semantic word games to try to get from "The earth is approximately flat" (true) to "The shape of the earth is mostly flat" (false), and I have no idea what the point is.All matter is just empty space. If this has been mentioned already pardon me for not looking at 100 post about flat earth.
In the opening statement one consideration was not made.
The scale of area to be determined flat compared to the size of the earth.
The curvature of the earth would be impossible to measure on a 5 mile or 50 mile runway even if the ground was leveled.
Even if you had a perfectly level runway for 5 miles,that could easily be achieved by a leveling of the earth's surface by natural or man made means.
Even still with the earth being round flat areas can exist,the human eye may not detect a flat spot on a golf ball ,but a microscope will reveal one.
Flat earth theroy is based on perception and a grand conspiracy theory,for what reason would we be decieved about our earth's shape ?
Flat earth wants us to toss aside the thousands of photos from space and believe in a theroy of feeling over fact.
When people, not NASA, but regular people send mini hot air balloons with cameras on them and put them right up to the edge of the atmosphere and you can clearly see the Earth to be spherical that is just an illusion right?
The ancient Greeks noticed that the shadow of any object represents the true shape of the object. When the earth passes between the moon and the sun,causing an eclipse,and the earth's shadow is round. Therefore logic dictates that the earth must be.....round. This photo proves that the earth is round.

You are tasked with building a runway for the Space X program that will
be used for the next space vehicle. The runway must be 5 miles long
and 500 ft wide. For safety reasons the runway must be smooth and level
so specifications call for it to be "Flat & Level" at any point measured.
To celebrate the "grand opening" you invite 1000 people from around the
world the evening before it's first use. They spread out and for fun you've
given them marbles and a level to test every aspect of the runway.
All at once they spill the marbles and confirm that the slope is perfect and
the marbles spread out evenly for everyone. "Flat and Level!" they all confirm.
You've also invited 10 scientists. They pull out their pocket laser pointers
lay them on the pavement and spend the entire celebration telling people
what idiots they all are for calling the runway flat. They show everyone
how the runway is "crowned" in both directions. They are not satisfied
until every person verbally repeats
"The runway is not flat.
The runway is not flat."
How shall we define flat?
I see two possible options...
1. The surface is free of any curvature.
2. From each point on the surface, gravity pulls in a direction downwards, perpendicular to the surface.
Tell me which one you want to use, then we can talk.
(Of course, feel free to suggest a third alternative.)
