As Perri lie mourning over the body of his beloved mother, he felt his world crumble around him. His father, his mother . . . they were all he had, the only only ones he trusted most. He felt so terribly alone. How could he get through this? How could her survive without these people to love him? Alone. He was very alone.

It seemed a very long time before he raised himself off his mother. He wiped the tears from his eyes and looked down into her face. Peaceful. He brushed a strand of hair from her face and let the tears well up in his eyes as he remembered their days together. The days when he would return home with his father to find her waiting for them on the doorstep and the scent of a delicious ham filling his nostrils. The days when they would go for a hike in the forest and race each other home, laughing as they went. The days that would never be again.

He wiped his eyes again and sighed. His father would be sad to see him grieve. He remembered his words. "When you are a fighter, you must be strong. When you lose a battle, you must move on." But how? How could he move on? What could he do?

"Gorhoughust! Gorhoughust!"

He gently lifted his mothers hands and folded them upon her chest and covered her with a blanket. He stood up and gazed at her one last time.

"I will avenge you, mother, father." he whispered, and slowly headed out of the room.

Tuan ran low to the ground, keeping an eye on the world around him. The land seemed empty save for the blackened trees rushing by, yet they were there, all around him, and who knew when death would sweep from the smoke-filled skies, talons outstretched?

Ahead of him, the forest of stumps opened out into a clearing. Tuan dropped to the ground and slithered the rest of the way, ignoring the cuts and scrapes the stone added to his body. The rustle of ashes felt like rattles in his skull.

I may have just ditched the world, Mathios, but if your pets get in my way now . . .

Breath held, he crept to the edge of the clearing and peered out.

His cabin had escaped notice in the attack. It stood intact, exactly as it had the previous morning. A few clusters of nburnt trees still huddled near its walls. No sign of Fells evidenced themselves. Overhead, the smoke drifted lazily.

Not daring to release breath, Tuan inched up onto all fours, then slowly rose to his feet. Muscles taut, he took a step away from cover, then another. Another.

Nothing moved.

He ran for the door.

Reine lightly touched the bag on her back, and the wrapped up cloth that stuck out a little. The Sai were a comfort in the knowledge that she had them. If he threated her again...

Rowan was lucky he'd started walking. The sharp tongue of a woman was poised and ready the next time he decided to direct his at her. The glare at the back of his head could have burned a hole right through. And in that moment, she made up her mind not to ever appear weak in front of him. She would not look tired, nor would she ever look at him in any way other than an icy look of contempt.
