It's hard for me to even take a video like the one presented seriously. The woman speaking is clearly wearing makeup. Any idea what happens to animals in the makeup industry? It's pretty horrific...and it doesn't serve any purpose as noble as feeding people. It serves personal vanity. Do you think women think of that every time they put on makeup?

You DO realize that there are cosmetic companies out there who don't test on animals, right? And some of them are even cheaper than mainstream products.

Not being able to imagine that others have had a different experience from your own is not a good way to engage in open discussions and debates. Regardless, I don't remember the first time I saw footage of actual cow/pig/chicken farms, but it certainly wasn't when I was 15 years old.

Because part of being a human being with a conscience and a heart is striving to alleviate as much unnecessary suffering as possible, IMO.

Sure I care, and I don't have shoes or furniture made of leather.

Do I care? Yes, I do. I hate seeing dogs tied up outside. It's inhumane to keep a social, pack animal isolated like that.

I champion what I can. I'm only one person.

You assume an awful lot about me. Tell me, which animals specifically, am I willfully ignorant about?

Before I respond...I'd like to say that I noticed you left out the exact same point that I made to LionL. If you look back at my post you quoted, it's the section right at the very bottom.

Why leave that out? Is it because you think that I'm assuming far too much...or do you think it's basically true?

It's because that's not part of what I was discussing with you.

How so? If our farming methods are a result of (as the lady in the video claimed) efficiency... then it's perfectly reasonable to assume that with a dramatic increase in mouths to feed, that sort of efficiency will become necessary...even if it isn't right now.

Just follow along...

Space for people decreases...space for pigs decreases...efficiency is required.

That's not so tough to understand, is it?

You're trying to take the discussion somewhere else. The point was "blind consumerism"; that is, we consume without really thinking about where our products come from. If you want to create a thread specifically about sustainability, please feel free.

I thought I read somewhere that this audience and their reaction was all staged.

OK...?

If you can back up that claim, that would be interesting.

Either way, rather that focusing specifically on "that woman" and "that audience", maybe we can focus on the topic. The video is just an example of the overall issue.

Issues like cleanliness seem to be a greater concern because they actually impact our health. Maybe, as cleanliness issues are addressed, animal treatment will improve as well.

Fair enough...

This is a product of living within a capitalist-consumerist society. As long as you have a economic model as such, you will have those whose sole job is to convince you to buy what you don't really need.

I'm not entirely sure it's a problem...but I'm sure I don't see any solution.

Ive heard that the producers of artificial meat use large quantities of di-hydrogen monoxide (the main constituent of acid rain) in its production. ;)

True, but I love chemicals in everything I eat & drink.

No, no, no!!!! Enough genetically modified food with weird ingredients. If God want us to consume di-hydrogen monoxide, He would have cover the Earth with it.

I've heard that Pepsi and Coke use it in large amounts during the manufacture of their soft drinks.

One more reason to stick with beer.

When more people want to buy something, it is sold at a higher cost. That is very simple economics.

It's called a substitution good. Veggies are a substitution product for meat, and when meat prices go up, demand and price of veggies go up, too.

Where do most people have gardens? Are we talking about the whole world? Or just the US? Is this a real statistic or just made up?

Completely made up.

Saying that as someone who has had a Garden most of the time.

And few of those in the U.S. who have gardens have anything even close to something that can feed them.

Thanks for sharing. I think a fair amount of people who have been around a while know that terms like "farm fresh" and some of the other more obvious marketing techniques usually don't mean much and would look at a use before or use by label to see how fresh the product actually is.

The spin using coloring books to target and influence children is both ingenious and sinister. That was interesting.

The last, willful ignorance, is also a great point. Most people succumb to it, and not just about food, but a whole variety of subjects, and for a variety of reasons, including perceived mass perception and fear of being ostracized by the public at large or from within their sphere of friends/family. That, and lack of interest or time. I'm as guilty as anyone else in this regard at times.
Wait, my kids church uses coloring books!!!
