You forgot the band that started it all for Death metal: Death
Great informative post though I knew it all but this could help a lot of misconceptions out of some people

or the actual first death metal band, Possessed. Slayer was a huge influence too

Examples of DM-pioneers were Morbid Angel, Possessed and Death.

I didn't mention Slayer here becuase they didn't pioneer in death metal itself, only have been an influence.

I'm really digging Moonsorrow. Anyone know of any similar bands?

A member of Moonsorrow also plays in Barathrum, Korpiklaani and Finntroll. Other bands that sound like Moonsorrow are Ensiferum, Thyrfing and Einherjar. This is all viking metal that has some connection with Moonsorrow, if you need more, and less popular bands, just ask.
