  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The differences between OT Laws and NT Commandments

Is God pleased if we try to keep them all... or is he pleased by Faith in the finished work of the Christ and when we live by the Spirit?

Living by the Spirit is living in obedience. We are not faithful only because we have faith, we are faithful because we have faith and are obedient.
1 Samuel 15:22 "Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the LORD? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams."
1 Peter 1:22
Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart.

Faith and obedience work hand in hand, one without the other is useless.

The very same God Who said "thou shalt not kill"
Also said "Remember the Sabbath to keep it holy."

One is not more valid than the other. If one applies to you, so do the other nine.

:idea:Here's a thought...just obey Him...and don't worry about what anyone else thinks about it.

At the end of the day, His opinion is the only one that counts, anyhow....

Same God, different covenant

The Jewish Sabbath, was commanded to be sign of the covenant made with Jew's. If the Jewish Sabbath were a command of any other covenant, it would no longer serve as a sign, for a particular covenant. Christ is our Sabbath rest.

We agree here though  Abraham obeyed God when he commanded him to sacrifice his son. Again, a different covenant.

OT commandmnets can be performed by anyone with enough will power to not kill or not commit adultery or not steal. Atheists can keep these commandments all day long. NT commandments are on a whole different level. The two main new covenant commandments are Faith and Love. Unbelievers by their very name don't believe so faith is out and if thay have any love at all it's only human love or self love which is far different than God's agape love. Faith and Love are also different in the fact that we receive both as gifts from the Holy Spirit. So in a nutshell OT commandments are human centered while NT commandments are God centered.

Wow...just excellent.

600 or 613 or 660 or 350 - we cant remember and keep them all and thats the point. If we break one, we break em all. Is God pleased if we try to keep them all (which we cant logically because theres no temple and we dont have the same judicial system) or is he pleased by Faith in the finished work of the Christ and when we live by the Spirit?

Amen.

God will still judge the whole world with the law (Rom. 3:19).

If non-Jews are judged by the law, then they will not be judged for observing it.
Rom 3:19 and the context.....
Israel after the flesh is judged by the law.....for non compliance to the laws of their covenant.

De 28:15 But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee:
De 28:45 Moreover all these curses shall come upon thee, and shall pursue thee, and overtake thee, till thou be destroyed; because thou hearkenedst not unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which he commanded them

The nations are judged by their treatment of Israel......vengeance belongs to the Lord.
De 30:7 And the LORD thy God will put all these curses upon thine enemies, and on them that hate thee, which persecuted thee.

EXODUS 16 [28] AND THE LORD SAID UNTO MOSES, HOW LONG REFUSE YE TO KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS AND MY LAWS?

Dont look to be human centered to me

And he also said...repent and believe the gospel!

The law has been replaced by something better. Praise God!!

The Law of God has not been replaced. The Old Covenant which is basically an agreement has been replaced with a newer and better Covenant.

I think missionaries often make the most sense of this dilemma. Acts 15 also clears it up quite well. There are laws specific to Jewish culture only. The imposition of these customs and commands on other cultures will only hinder the effectiveness of the gospel on them.

God has always desired worship from the nations. Imposing Jewish culture on them strips them of the unique and beautiful worship that they can provide.

God's laws were meant for all mankind. They were in effect before the Old Covenant was instituted, like the 10 Commandments, tithing, etc.
When the Old Covenant was replaced by the New Testament, God's instructions for mankind's happiness and health did not come to an end. the New Testament or agreement makes it possible to have God's laws ingrained in our minds and hearts.
The old covenant rituals, and sacrifices were longer necessary because of Jesus's sacrifice to remove the curse of the Law.
The New Testament was never written as a replacement for the Old Testament. Rather the Old Testament is the basis and foundation of the New testament- Acts 28:23-and this was being done over 20 years after the resurrection of Christ.

Acts 15 did not say that Gentiles weren't to obey God's law, but rather they did not need to keep Jewish traditions for how to keep the law in order to be saved.
