I think we say we're sorry to the Lord quite a bit, but then we don't change. The Lord has said things in the scripture like "These people worship Me with their lips but their hearts are far from Me." Basically this is saying to us that our actions speak louder than our words. We can say we love God but a true heart after the Lord is an obedient heart. If all we ever say to the Lord is that we're sorry, but then we don't change, we are only worshiping Him with our lips. In Jeremiah 3:12-15 the LORD pleads with His children to return to Him. He only wanted them to acknowledge their sin against Him, that they had transgressed against the LORD. One of the meanings of that word "acknowledge" is to perceive and see, to find out and discern. We need to perceive and see the gravity of what we have done, and to discern and find out Whom we have transgressed against, because the scripture says that while worldly sorrow brings only death (the half-hearted im sorrys) godly sorrow leads to repentance. (2 Corinthians 7:10)
