  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

St Peter says this about Paul's letters...which is interesting considering the Protestants tend to use them to come up with ideas about "faith alone."

And we all know that Martin Luther was likely mentally unstable, right?

Talk about prophecy being fufilled!
Once again.....Nice.....

i came across a lvoely quote from the CCC kind of relevant to this:
"the desire to recover the unity of all Christians is a gift of Christ and a call of the Holy Spirit"
from what i'm gathering in a lot of my studies right now, the Church desires greatly for unity. it's something to be prayed for daily. we diminish that greatly with the petty arguments we get into. we as Catholics and other denoms alike are to respect the goodness and truths of ALL denominations and embrace one another as a our bretheren. i know i read somehting about that in there. i'll have to go look it up...

WOW! Thanks for the quote Kimber!

This is just what I was wondering the other day! If it was a good vocation to try and work for unity!

"Christ bestowed unity on his Church from the beginning. This unity, we believe, subsists in the Catholic Church as something she can never lose, and we hope that it will continue to increase until the end of time." Christ always gives his Church the gift of unity, but the Church must always pray and work to maintain, reinforce, and perfect the unity that Christ wills for her. This is why Jesus himself prayed at the hour of his Passion, and does not cease praying to his Father, for the unity of his disciples: "That they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be one in us, . . . so that the world may know that you have sent me." The desire to recover the unity of all Christians is a gift of Christ and a call of the Holy Spirit."

Maybe the HS is calling me to do this!

Sorry, the truth hurts, but this is the OBOB forum where I can speak the truth...

I am sorry if it hurts though, honestly!!
No see it's not your idea of truth or my idea of truth. It's about having a little respect for your brothers and sisters in Christ.

But then again, that's up to you, do as you please.

I do respect you, which is why I won't lie to you for the sake of false unity.

I agree with you Tigersnare. I do think that sometimes though the OBOBers go a little bonkers (myself included) because we get such NASTINESS from the Protestants (I mean, they tell us to GET LOST if we ask simple questions on PRE. And they're NOT very nice about it).

Be forgiving and patient, please, and in turn you will be blessed.

I would think 90% of this stems from misunderstanding or, "A failure to communicate". It wasn't until I was enlightened some gracious and kind posters here that I understood better the Catholic "mindset"(for lack of a better word). Now I'm hoping to see other Christians, not "Catholics".

I feel like when persucution arises, it's we're either with Jesus or against him, the hangman isn't going to care which Denomination we are.

here's another defensofidei:
"the Catholic Church recognizes in other religions that search, among the shadows and images, for the God who is unknown yet near since he gives life and breath and all things and wants all men to be saved. Thus, the Church considers all goodness and truth found in these religions as ' a preparation for the Gospel and given by him who enlightens all men that they may at lenght have life.' "

Didn't you know the True Christians TM were hiding underground for those 1500 years?

:p

Not all of them. If you read books like Carroll's The Trail of Blood, you'll find that they couldn't have been, because the evil ole Catholic Church systematically murdered 1,476,942,908,367,422,000,¼ "Bible Christians" during the Middle Ages---and that was just during the first six weeks of 1353.

Of course the bible can be abused to the devil's purposes:

As the Early Fathers witness, none were louder in quoting from the scriptures than the Marcionites, the Arian Heretics, Docetists and others.

Since then, virtually everyone who has founded a perversion of Christianity to mislead humanity has taken hold of some scripture to "build" it upon. The Bogomils, Cathars, Unitarians, Jehovahs Witnesses, Mormons, Christian Scientists, Koresh followers, all take portions of scripture and use them to build a structure of untruth.

it is a common pattern. One of the favourite deceptions.

The Bible itself answers your questions about whether people can misinterpret the Bible to their own detriment.

2 Peter 3:16
He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.

St Peter says this about Paul's letters...which is interesting considering the Protestants tend to use them to come up with ideas about "faith alone."

And we all know that Martin Luther was likely mentally unstable, right?

Good Day, DOF

I think that the whole post was a generalization as to the understanding of Scripture. The comments of Luther are some thing we have talked about in the past and do not see these comments as proven or of a benifit to the discussion. Just my thoughts!
