Simon,

I believe it clearly shows that St. Peter (and his successors) was intended to shepherd and lead God's people.

PAX
As were all the apostles my friend, to be shepherds that is.
The feed my sheep deal was clearly a restoring of Peter, 3 times denied 3 times restored.

No matter what level of importance you wish to place on Peter in scripture you'll not be able to attach it to Rome and her successors ALONE. From Peter alone.

I think that I can, once we have agreed on Peter's significance. Only Peter was told specifically to tend, feed, and care for His sheep.

Perhaps since Peter was a Jew and one of the original 12 Apostles, maybe Jesus was referring to the Lost Sheep of Israel as that is whom Peter was sent to correct?

Matthew 10:6 Be going yet rather to the sheep, the having been lost/perishing/apo-lwlota <622> (5756) of-house of Israel. [Matthew 15:24]

Now that is interesting, and I am sure there is a connection, but as we both know Jesus never intended to limit Himself or His church to the Jewish people only.

Peter was the mouthpeice for the apostles at times, albeit with a mouth in the shape of his foot frequently a mouthpeice nonetheless.
That is as close to a common ground as you'll get with me using scripture.
