  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Chapter Seven: The Graft
Scion is the closet major town to Abadon, being inconveniently placed right next to the Great Mountains. It is the major weapon storehouse of Triscolia, with so many tunnels and traps and pits a visitor to the city can disappear forever. Because of this, and the heavy guard of a thousand soldiers placed in the city, there had never been any threat to Scion’s safety. The city—so named because it had originally been grafted out of Diab on the opposite side of the mountains—had finally been captured through the courage and fortitude of General Caspian de Erita’s expertly trained battalions. To win it back would mean open war.

*****
The crowd’s emotions were rising and falling like a wave. Fear and terror, anger, madness, and even a bit of insanity ruled the streets as the news of Scion’s capture was spread. Women gathered up their children and ran for their homes as groups of enraged men charged through the streets, shouting for war and justice.
In the midst of this, Katharine was trying to keep sight of General Edward and Nathan. The two men were attempting to reach the King’s palace, but they were halted every few moments by the crowd. Finally, some soldiers arrived and escorted the general and lieutenant to the palace. Katharine was momentarily caught in the rush of people, but managed to fight her way through them to follow Edward and Nathan.
“Katharine! Come on, you’re going to get trampled!” Nathan shouted, and the soldiers let her in their formation.
Katharine hurried to catch up with Nathan. “Lieutenant, where are we doing?”
“We?” Nathan glanced at her sideways, and then sighed. “My father and I must speak with the king. If we do not regain Scion soon, we will not have enough weapons to sustain our guards, let alone fight a war.”
“I hate the Abadonians.” Katharine whispered vehemently. “Why can’t they just leave us alone?”
Nathan shook his head but did not reply, and the two fell silent as they hurried along the crowded streets. They reached the palace quickly and safely, followed by an enormous crowd of citizens all demanding to know with what plan of action the Triscolians were going retaliate.
Katharine, even in all the mayhem, was impressed and awed by the sheer size and beauty of the palace. Made of pure, golden polyion and adorned with all manner of precious metals and gems, the royal residence spoke of the splendor of the past kings of Triscolia. Even the massive crowd could not smother its resounding glory and towering height.
She followed Nathan and his father into the inner court. Massive, intricately carved columns lined the golden hall on both sides, and the floor was inlaid with gleaming polyion as well. Running to catch up, Katharine made it to Nathan just in time to see his father disappear through a pair of gigantic white doors at the end of hall.
“Where are you going?” she asked when she reached him, breathless.
He shot her a despairing look. “Into the throne room, of course. To discuss what we are going to do. And after that, it will be up to us to raise an army.”
“That won’t need much encouragement. Triscolians here are very loyal and will do anything to help Scion. As will I.”
“You?” Nathan smirked.
Katharine, frowning, was about to reply but stopped when the double doors opened.
“Nathan, come in here immediately.” Edward said quickly, his face lined with anxiety. “The King wants to speak with both of us.”
“Stay here.” Nathan ordered Katharine quickly, and then he too disappeared into the great room behind the doors.
Katharine heaved a sigh but could think of nothing else to do. She could not leave, not when she could gain information here, so she sat down on a nearby marble bench against the wall to wait.
“Waiting,” She grumbled angrily. “What women have been doing for a thousand years in time of war. We wait.” She sighed and leaned her head against the wall. So much had occurred today and she was exhausted. It seemed like seconds before she closed her eyes and fell asleep.

Diab, Abadon

“Where is she?”
Scalon’s roaring shout echoed through the stone-paneled room. Before him stood the shaking form of Captain Avery Gritamer, who was disheveled and caked with mud.
“Answer me, scum. Where is she?” Scalon was incensed, his face contorted in a scowl.
“Well, s-sire, she is in Parnassian, I know that.” Avery stammered, terrified.
“I do not want her in Parnassian! I want her here! She should be here trembling before me, not you, you worthless, pitiful, vile heap of cowardice.” Scalon said in a low, menacing voice, his obsidian eyes shooting rage. “You leave me with three hundred men, countless weapons, and a simple assignment. And you return in complete and utter failure.”
“I-I am truly sorry, my liege, but the Triscolians—”
“No excuses! All you had to do was bring me the sorry women in the infernal wagons! But yet those weak Triscolians are able to surprise you and get the women to Parnassian.”
“The women gave us more trouble than we expected, majesty!”
“No excuses!” Scalon shouted, picking up the dagger that lay on the table next to his straight backed chair. “You failed me, and it will be the last time anyone will ever fail me. Let this be a lesson to all others who think they can perform less than perfectly for the almighty ruler of both Abadon and Triscolia!” He unsheathed the dagger with a terrifying metallic clang and held it over Avery’s head.
“You do not want to kill me, Scalon.” Avery’s voice was hard now, as cold as ice and unyielding, and he had stopped shaking.
“Do not tell me what I want!” Scalon screamed in Avery’s face. “I want that girl standing here before me!”
“And you shall get her.” Avery said calmly, unblinking.
Scalon, in one sudden motion, pressed the cold dagger next to Avery’s throat. “Give me one good reason why this dagger should not end what pitiful existence you have.”
Avery winced under the dagger, his confidence gone, but managed to croak, “I know exactly who she is.”
“She?” Scalon frowned and lessened the dagger’s pressure. “And how is that possible?”
“I saw her birthmark,” Avery replied, a glint in his eye. “That birthmark under her chin the royal parents adored so much.”
Scalon’s eyes widened. “Shaped like a‘t’?” He moved the dagger and stood back, folding his arms across his chest. “Tell me everything.”
Avery grinned triumphantly. “When the Triscolians attacked our camp, I had been…teaching the girl to obey me. Then arrows started flying and they downed some of the men. One of my soldiers grabbed the girl to use her as a shield against the arrows, and in that moment she screamed and looked straight up. That’s when I saw it. I, being the tough and adaptable fellow I am, managed to grab the girl and drag her out of the camp for a mile or so. But I was followed. The wretched Triscolian was weaker than I, but his combined strength with the girl’s was too much.”
“You let a girl and a half-wit Triscolian soldier beat you.” Scalon stated flatly, his face expressionless.
“Well, yes, my liege.” Avery admitted sheepishly. “But the dumb Triscolian didn’t carry me back to the rest, and so I escaped. I managed to steal a horse from a nearby village, and made it all the way here in less than two days.”
“But without the girl.”
“Well, yes, but now we know where she is! The Triscolians would have put the women in Parnassian. She has to be in there somewhere.”
“Wretched Triscolians.” Scalon murmured, moving to peer out of a heavy glass window. “But not for long. Oh no, not for long. Soon they will be begging for mercy from me!” He cackled gleefully and whirled around. “Avery!”
“Yes, my liege?”
“The Triscolian army will soon issue forth from the gates of Parnassian to try and regain Scion. That will leave the city unarmed.”
A light dawned in Avery’s eyes. “All the menfolk will be off in their meager little army…there will be no one to stop us from taking the Golden City!”
“I cannot believe you just realized that, you brainless fool.” Scalon growled. “I have been planning it for ages. We will go through the opposite part of the Black Desert from the oncoming Triscolian army. We will find Parnassian mostly empty, and we shall take it. And I will have the one for whom I have been searching these twenty years!” His laugh resonated through the room.
“You are a genius, majesty.” Avery put in quickly.
Scalon grinned, revealing rows of gleaming, perfectly white teeth. “Of course I am.”
“What are your orders, my lord?”
“You are to go to Clandestine. Tell that simpering idiot Dagon I have captured Scion and all is going according to plan. But, Avery,” Scalon’s eyes shone, and he softened his voice, “Tell him nothing of Parnassian. Or the woman.”
Avery bowed low. “Consider it done, my liege.” He turned to leave the imposing tower room.
“Oh, and Avery…”
Avery turned quickly. “Y-yes, my lord?”
“Tell my generals and captains to meet me here in my tower room. It is time to forge the strategies we will use to begin the final defeat of Triscolia.”
