  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I've often wondered if I've been put on ignore suddenly when in the middle of a discussion.
I've only put one poster () on ignore. Ever. I do sometimes simply not respond to some ignorant posts, but I like to leave my options open. I also occasionally get a no-expenses-paid CF "Vacation".:ebil:

Yes, there comes a time in these discussions that it becomes clear that any further responses are just a waste of time. Many threads I will not even click on because it is clear what form they take based on the poster and topic. Many times the same topic over and over again.

Yes, lately that's become part of the anti-Bernie narrative. That just white college kids are the ones voting for him. He's still a Democrat, which means he's going to do a lot better with minorities than the Republican candidates.

It's funny. When Obama was our front runner, conservatives essentially said, "You're going easy on him because he's black. You're pandering to minorities."

But when we have a white candidate its "you guys don't care about diversity after all."

Am I evil for rooting for Trump just a little bit, since it would be so very fun to watch Hillary mop the floor with him?

Also, am I alone in thinking that there will be blood in the streets of Cleveland this July regardless of what the Republican convention does? I think it's going to look like Chicago in '68.

I have to warn you that Democrats declared victory when Reagan got the GOP nomination; he was a joke candidate. Look how that turned out. Not that there's a clear acceptable alternative...

Reagan was said to have gotten support from Democrats as well. I don't see that with Lord [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] the Birther.

Trump's appeal is to nationalism, and an appeal to blame outsiders for the pain that we feel. There are many Democrats who might vote for Trump. The Middle Class have the same wages as in the 70's. Trump promises them change. He blames immigrants. He blames trade deals. There are many Democrats who now oppose NAFTA and other trade deal. Trump wants Europeans and Asians to pay much more for their defense. Trump doesn't want to use US troops to defend foreigners. All this has appeal.

We should be very careful. There are indeed lots of old white men who have voted for Democrats in the past, who now might vote for Trump. And, many of these men are in states like PA that have been reliably Democratic.

I agree.

BTW, if Trump is nominated, there will be lots of Republican PAC money backing Clinton (actually attacking Trump). The system and country are worth protecting. Trump is much more of a danger to Republicans that Clinton. If Clinton wins, the Republican Party can try to wake up from a bad dream. If Trump wins, there is no waking up; the Republican Party will have made a major change to a nationalist, protectionist party, much like some of the European parties.

Oh I totally remember the Great Reagan Upset of 1980. I was barely (barely) too young to vote in that election, and it upset me mightily. There were many legal "adults" of my acquaintance who were clearly stupider than I was.

I watched my parents go through the progression of:
  • Oh my goodness, how ridiculous it is that Ronald Reagan is running for president
  • Oh dear sweet Jesus, he's doing pretty well
  • If I die in the next 4 years, please explain to people why I died a registered Republican
  • Oh Holy God, he got the nomination
  • This can't be happening
  • He's won. We're all going to die

I remember those times well. After all, I graduated from high school in 1964. I remember consoling the Goldwater folks in 1964. This election reminds me of that election, not 1980.

I have a word for Trump from another recent politician.

I knew Ronald Reagan, and you're no Ronald Reagan.

As a semi-trained historian, I absolutely agree that this election is much more reminiscent of 1964/1968. I truly believe there will be blood in the streets of Cleveland come July.

But Trump is Reagan. An intellectual piker with great PR skills and a case of Narcisistic Personality Disorder who believes that, because he's incredibly charming, he is capable of being President of the United States of America.

The only real difference is that Trump probably doesn't have Alzheimer's Disease.
