  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Anyone seen it? I watched it last week and I was moved to tears most of the way through. I'm not even into war films - but this one was just so different and original.

I thought it was a great movie, and I'd recommend it to others. However...

There's one thing that keeps it from being in my "favorite movies" list - the wedding scene is just way too long. I've been to actual weddings that seem shorter.

I saw The Deer Hunter(which I now think is an excellent film) when it first came out and must confess that I didn't understand it. And because so much of it was a downer I didn't like it...back then...when I was much, much younger and the world appeared more the way I wanted it to appear other than the way it was...:help:

Over the years after viewing it on T.V. or renting it about three or four times I realize that there is so much more to this movie than I first thought. Either that or I see it more as a reflection of an era in American history ;and I get the message... :sigh:

It has a classic appeal to it. It is a study in disllusionment and what tragic things war can do to people. And...it is very symbolic...thus the deer hunting scenes. This is one among many of Meryl Streep's really great early films...and, of course...Robert DeNiro is excellent as are John Savage and the others.

Another great movie made around the same time and also in which John Savage had a significant role was The Onion Field. BTW, does anyone know what ever happened to John Savage?

The Deer Hunter really got to me the last time I viewed it...not only because I remember the Viet Nam War era but because I don't remember it as well as I wish I had. This makes it live again and it feels very real to me now and makes me profoundly sad. :(
The movie didn't change...it is the same. but I guess I'm not.

A great post, birdfriend. I wish there were more like it on The Box Office forums; I'd spend more time here.

John Savage seems to have hit his peak in the late 70s, with The Onion Field, Hair and The Deer Hunter. He's still around - I've seen him on Law & Order - but I don't think his work is as prestigious as it once was.

Another interesting thing about The Deer Hunter is that it stars John Cazale. Cazale was engaged to Meryl Streep, but died of cancer before The Deer Hunter was released. His other films, The Godfather, The Godfather Part II, The Conversation and Dog Day Afternoon all have something in common with The Deer Hunter: they were nominated for Best Picture.

El Brujo, Wonderful! Liked your post too and I appreciate that this thread was started. Thanks for the information about John Savage. Am so glad you shared about John Cazale. When I posted mine I was remembering that Meryl Streep was engaged to him and remembered him in the Godfather and The Godfather, Part II(His character is killed off in the end by Al Pacino's character, right?). I thought Cazale and Streep were an unusual combination of people but am not sure why. Too bad he died so young. A fine actor!

Looking forward to more posts from you. Think I will start one soon on a particular movie. birdfriend.

Lovely, sad, lovely movie; a friend of mine in college suggested I see it, and I loved it when I finally went out and rented it. John Williams' "Cavatina" (the theme music) still evokes a tremendous melancholy in me whenever I hear it...
