The declutter thread

What's one or several things that you own in your home or car that could use tossing away with to make more room and free you up from becoming a horder?

I just read that the decluttering bug is hitting people thanks to the new netflix show about a Tidy Home. I have already been trying to declutter my house and got rid of a lot of things the past year and am currently working on continuing it. The goal is to be able to fit my favorite things in a U-haul if I want to move and just restock through thrift stores and Craigslist or move into furnished housing after my kids move out. I am a long way off partly because of sentimental attachments and not wanting to get rid of some things because "I might need that" in the future and having spent a lot of time not being able to afford to buy those things. I am working on developing a more healthy means of making those decisions ... but I am stumped on things that I need but have no attachment to. For example, extra bras. I have the ones I wear until they are worn out...and I have a few that I don't like as much but do the job. I hate to get rid of a bra just because it isn't a favorite. I can get rid ones that don't fit right, or are itchy, or are ugly...but according to the tidy show, only keep things that make you feel joy. The truth is no bra makes me feel joy, even my favorites, but I need them so they need to stay. And for those of you few males who are now wondering, I don't like to go without either....it is just a neutral item in my drawers.

I also wonder about shoes. I have the couple pair that I alternate between on most days. Those are my "joyful" shoes. They are based on comfort mostly. And I have other shoes that are appropriate for other situations that I might find myself in but I don't necessary love but have no desire to go shopping if I do find myself in these situations...interviews, conferences, weddings. I hate to get rid of quality shoes that fit even if I may not love them. Even more so since my daughter wears almost the same size and borrows mine so she doesn't have to buy shoes that she doesn't love.

As for the OP, I haven't been targeting particular items but have been trying to focus on a room and remove the clutter from that room...trying to get rid of most of the excess but trying to find a home for the stuff that doesn't belong in that room but I do want to keep.

Oh, after watching the declutter show, I am going to go back in my closet and try again. I do know I have a bunch of sweaters in a box that fit and I mostly like but I don't seem to ever wear. I need to purge that box since I am not a sweater person.

That actually could be considered a form of gluttony ... to have excess of anything.

Define excess. One could argue more than one of each item of clothing is excess.

I like my variety of clothes, fragrances etc.

Gluttony is the mindset that you can't have too many clothes. The actual amount is different for different people.
