  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Translator's Introduction

The anti-Orthodox career and statements of the late Patriarch Athenagoras of sorry memory have been so striking that they have perhaps tended to obscure the fact that the apostasy of this one man was merely the culmination of a long and thorough process of the departure from the Orthodox Faith of an entire Local Orthodox Church. The promise of the new Patriarch Demetrios to "follow upon the footsteps of our great Predecessor… in pursuing Christian unity" and to institute "dialogues" with Islam and other non-Christian religions, while recognizing "the holy blessed Pope of Rome Paul VI, the first among equals within the universal Church of Christ" (Enthronement Address) — only confirms this observation and reveals the depths to which the Church of Constantinople has fallen in our own day.

It should be noted that the title "Ecumenical" was bestowed on the Patriarch of Constantinople as a result of the transfer of the capital of the Roman Empire to this city in the 4th century; the Patriarch then became the bishop of the city which was the center of the ecumene or civilized world. Lamentably, in the 20th century the once-glorious See of Constantinople, having long since lost its earthly glory, has cheaply tried to regain prestige by entering on two new "ecumenical" paths: it has joined the "ecumenical movement," which is based on an anti-Christian universalism; and, in imitation of apostate Rome, it has striven to subject the other Orthodox Churches to itself and make of its Patriarch a kind of Pope of Orthodoxy.

The following article, which is part of a report on all the Autocephalous Churches made by Archbishop John to the Second All-Diaspora Sobor of the Russian Church Abroad held in Yugoslavia in 1938, gives the historical background of the present state of the Patriarchate of Constantinople. It could well have been written today, nearly 35 years later, apart from a few small points which have changed since then, not to mention the more spectacular "ecumenical" acts and statements of the Patriarchate in recent years, which have served to change it from the "pitiful spectacle" here described into one of the leading world centers of anti-Orthodoxy.

[...]

In sum, the Ecumenical Patriarchate, in theory embracing almost the whole universe and in fact extending its authority only over several dioceses, and in other places having only a higher superficial supervision and receiving certain revenues for this; persecuted by the government at home, and not supported by any governmental authority abroad; having lost its significance as a pillar of truth and having itself become a source of division, and at the same time being possessed by an exorbitant love of power—represents a pitiful spectacle which recalls the worst periods in the history of the See of Constantinople.

Just some thoughts ..

The Patriarch of Constantinople is under continual attack from the Turkish government, who controls who will be the next Patriarch, and who heavily taxes the Church there (probably taking a cut of all the donations sent by Americans.) How many Patriarchs have been killed directly or indirectly by the muslims - hundreds I fear. Not a job to be cherished.

I heard that there is already in place a patriarchal headquarters in Switzerland should the Patriarch of Constantinople need a place of refugee. The Turks would love to see the Patriarch permanently move there so that they can take over all the Patriarchial property in Constantinople. However, the turks would lose out on all the ransom monies (heavy taxes) that the Patriarch needs to pay in order to live in Istanbul.

I started reading "From the Holy Mountain" the other night. The stories Darymple relays of firebombings, threats and the desecration of the Holy places of Constantinople and the Phanar were upsetting. There are people in Turkey who will only rest once every mark of Christianity, every church, every monastery, every bell tower, every last Christian, is removed from the country.

We should be praying for the Patriarch and the future of the Patriarchate.

Hi, there!

I'd like to know what you disagree with in that article?

A lot of things, specially this:

The schismatics' site said:
Later, in 1962, Archbishop Leonty of Chile of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad traveled to Greece and, together with Archbishop Akakios Pappas, consecrated Parthenios of the Cyclades, Auxentios of Gardikion, and Chrysostom of Magnesia. The consecrations also were done without the knowledge or blessing of the Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad.

And

Thus, on December 18, 1969, Metropolitan Philaret and the entire Synod of the Metropolitan Philaret of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad officially and canonically ratified and recognized the consecrations of the G.O.C. Traditional Church of Greece of the Florinite jurisdiction.

Now, the Canons of the Ecumenical Councils say this:

Canon XVI of the First Ecumenical Council (Nice I, 325 a.D.)
Such presbyters or deacons as desert their own Church are not to be admitted into another, but are to be sent back to their own diocese. But if any bishop should ordain one who belongs to another Church without the consent of his own bishop, the ordination shall be cancelled.

Canon II of the Second Ecumenical Council (Constantinople I, 381 a.D.)
The bishops are not to go beyond their dioceses nor bring confusion on the churches; but the Churches of God in heathen nations must be governed according to the custom which has prevailed from the time of the Fathers.

Canon XV of the First Ecumenical Council (Nice I, 325 a.D.)
On account of the great disturbance and discords that occur, it is decreed that the custom prevailing in certain places contrary to the Canon, must wholly be done away; so that neither bishop, presbyter, nor deacon shall pass from city to city. And if any one, after this decree of the holy and great Synod, shall attempt any such thing, or continue in any such course, his proceedings shall be utterly void, and he shall be restored to the Church for which he was ordained bishop or presbyter.

Canon XIV (Canons of the Holy Apostles)
A bishop is not allowed to leave his own diocese, and pass over into another, although he may be pressed by many to do so, unless there be some proper cause constraining him (..) And this must be done not of his own accord, but by the judgement of many bishops, and at their earnest exhortion.

All quotes are from the CCEL site.

So we can conclude

1) ROCOR acted uncanonically when their bishops ordained bishops for another jurisdiction - in this case, the Orthodox Church of Greece.

2) They disobeyed the Holy Canons of Nice I and Constantinople I and many others - which they claim to mantain to the end.

3) As per Canon XV of Nice I, the consagrations of the "florinite" bishops (and any susequent schism of an schism of an schism) are automatically invalid and null. Thus, no Greek "True O" church has valid clergy and/or sacraments.

Case closed.
