  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I am surprised no thread on this yet. It is quite popular and engaging though. It is based on the Gospel but also has fictional material to provide context.
I am enjoying it. The actor playing Jesus seems effective. I think it has helped me appreciate the Jewish situation and the threat Jesus presented, forcing leaders to pick a side.

It is a Mormon funded show. That's all I have to say.

Here is some info about the show, from a video

Joe McClane on The Chosen (Duration: 20 min)

Video Summary:

This video is discussing a television show called "The Chosen," which presents a depiction of Jesus Christ and His followers. The speakers, hosts Joe McClane and guest Leila Miller, express criticism towards the show due to its focus on humanizing Jesus to an extent that they believe strays too far from traditional Catholic teachings and interpretations of Christ's character. They argue that the emotional aspect of the show is emphasized excessively and serves as a means of addiction for viewers rather than promoting intellectual or spiritual growth.

They specifically mention concerns regarding the portrayal of Jesus as not taking His mission seriously, displaying weakness, and engaging in humor. Leila Miller compares these elements to inversions, instances where something is presented incorrectly or out of order. They believe that Jesus' humanity should always be secondary to His divinity and that the storyline of "The Chosen" deviates significantly from historical accounts of Jesus found within Catholic patrimony.

Additionally, Miller discusses the problematic aspects of having a primarily non-Catholic production team (including Mormons) involved in creating such content meant for Catholics, particularly since these individuals may hold differing beliefs and traditions. Ultimately, they caution listeners not to be swayed by popular entertainment, emphasizing the importance of remaining rooted in traditional Catholic teaching and avoiding compromises that might lead to losing one's faith.

From Wiki: Is this not correct? It does mention that a location was offered by the LDS church in Utah, but they have remained in Texas.

The producers primarily employ a crowdfunding approach to finance production; The Chosen became the most successful crowdfunded TV series or film project in history. The series streams for free on its own app, using a pay-it-forward model for viewers to contribute funding to make it free for others. Additional revenue comes through licensing to other streaming platforms, TV networks, and theatrical releases. Filming began on rental sets in Texas.

I think you can chalk this up to "another Jesus" that they are presenting in this series.

It's not really any more "another Jesus" than any other movie or tv show about Jesus is about "another Jesus."

But if you don't want to watch it, no one says you have to......................................................... it's just a t.v. show after all, and everyone knows this.

It is crowdfunded, but produced partially by LDS. Just be careful my friend. I prefer Jesus in the Bible, not Jesus on the flat screen.

I agree. Though the few episodes I've seen, they didn't offend me or seem too wrong. It is obviously a dramatization and I recognize it as such. I don't feel like it has led me astray as much as brought the time period to life for me.

Correct, you are using discernment, just be careful my friend. May I ask, what is your denomination? I am Catholic, and see pros and cons to most denominations, as I used to be non-denominational. :)

I guess you could say I'm non-denominational, though I've always attended Protestant churches. I've had some wonderful experiences from every denomination. The "holiest" person I ever met was Catholic, it was a Mormon who first brought me to the Lord and I gained much wisdom from the Methodist church, though I no longer attend one. I really feel we are all one in Christ.

Amen to that, we are all one in Christ, and we should not divide ourselves. It is good that you stayed away from Mormonism, but it is great that a Mormon brought you into Christianity. I am glad that you have switched to non-denominational. As a Catholic, I like my Protestant and non-denominational brethren.

1 Corinthians 12:24b-26 (NIV): "But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it, so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it."

I've just watched clips, and liked what I saw. Initially I expected the worse from a TV show about Jesus. I'd be interested in hearing complaints about how they've seriously mischaracterized Jesus and the Gospel and in what way. Rather then what I've been hearing which has been that LDS is somehow involved. Or a that a single line from the whole show (Jesus saying "I am the law of Moses") is close to a line out of the book of Mormon. And nitpicking of that sort.

Yes, a dramatization with embellishment that I thought helped orient to the time period.

I am pretty familiar with all the Gospels and I am not seeing anything that seems out of place except for the leather backpack.

The Jesus we see portrayed in the Gospels leaves a lot to our own imagination. Here we see the writers' imaginations filling in context with some fiction. But I don't see distortion. My image of Jesus is both human and divine. That means laughter and grief.

True, but the show overemphasizes the human part, more so compared to the God part, from what I have heard. Just use discernment, my friend. I care for you deeply. Remember the old adage that goes like this: Movies based off of books are not as good or faithful to the original? The Bible is what I would stick to.

If you want a Christian show to watch, that is not hinging on trying to recreate the Gospels, Vindication is a Christian police detective show from 2019:

I agree with you. I consider my denomonation to be Christian. I've always enjoyed visiting churches of various denominations, including attending Catholic mass. When I'm with a group of people who love the Lord I feel at home.

That's been my experience in what I've seen of it. I think considering TV show about Jesus in these times could have been a total abomination, it's turned out pretty well.
