Miss Rowy has agreed to lead a discussion about Psalm 119.

Psalm 119 is one of the longest Psalms and I am sure we will all find it very interesting.

Aleph

Blessed are those whose ways are blameless,
who walk according to the law of the Lord.

2 Blessed are those who keep his statutes
and seek him with all their heart—

3 they do no wrong
but follow his ways.

4 You have laid down precepts
that are to be fully obeyed.

5 Oh, that my ways were steadfast
in obeying your decrees!

6 Then I would not be put to shame
when I consider all your commands.

7 I will praise you with an upright heart
as I learn your righteous laws.

8 I will obey your decrees;
do not utterly forsake me

Psalm 119 verses 9 to 16

Beth
9 How can a young person stay on the path of purity?
By living according to your word.
10 I seek you with all my heart;
do not let me stray from your commands.
11 I have hidden your word in my heart
that I might not sin against you.
12 Praise be to you, Lord;
teach me your decrees.
13 With my lips I recount
all the laws that come from your mouth.
14 I rejoice in following your statutes
as one rejoices in great riches.
15 I meditate on your precepts
and consider your ways.
16 I delight in your decrees;
I will not neglect your word.

Psalm 119 verses 17 to 24

Gimel

17 Be good to your servant while I live,
that I may obey your word.
18 Open my eyes that I may see
wonderful things in your law.
19 I am a stranger on earth;
do not hide your commands from me.
20 My soul is consumed with longing
for your laws at all times.
21 You rebuke the arrogant, who are accursed,
those who stray from your commands.
22 Remove from me their scorn and contempt,
for I keep your statutes.
23 Though rulers sit together and slander me,
your servant will meditate on your decrees.
24 Your statutes are my delight;
they are my counselors.

Psalm 119 verses 25 to 32

25 I am laid low in the dust;
preserve my life according to your word.
26 I gave an account of my ways and you answered me;
teach me your decrees.
27 Cause me to understand the way of your precepts,
that I may meditate on your wonderful deeds.
28 My soul is weary with sorrow;
strengthen me according to your word.
29 Keep me from deceitful ways;
be gracious to me and teach me your law.
30 I have chosen the way of faithfulness;
I have set my heart on your laws.
31 I hold fast to your statutes, Lord;
do not let me be put to shame.
32 I run in the path of your commands,
for you have broadened my understanding

Psalm 119v32

This verse caught my attention as being of inspiriation to Christians.

Psalms 119 33 to 40

33 Teach me, Lord, the way of your decrees,
that I may follow it to the end.
34 Give me understanding, so that I may keep your law
and obey it with all my heart.
35 Direct me in the path of your commands,
for there I find delight.
36 Turn my heart toward your statutes
and not toward selfish gain.
37 Turn my eyes away from worthless things;
preserve my life according to your word.
38 Fulfill your promise to your servant,
so that you may be feared.
39 Take away the disgrace I dread,
for your laws are good.
40 How I long for your precepts!
In your righteousness preserve my life

Please feel at liberty to make you own comments about the Psalms.

However long, however short, your comments will always be very welcome.

Are you tricking us? ;) Just teasing, but really. (19-118?)

I was never a giant fan of psalms..."HE SHALL REWARD EVIL UNTO MINE ENEMIES! BE NOT MERCIFUL TO ANY WICKED TRANSGRESSORS! CONSUME THEM IN WRATH! BRING THEM DOWN! BREAK THEIR TEETH! GOD SHALL DESTROY THEE FOREVER! LET THEIR EYES BE DARKENED THAT THEY SEE NOT! LUKE 9:55, ACTS 13:11"

Luke 6:35, Matthew 5:44-45.

YESLORDIWILL,

The jump to 119 was so that Miss Rowy could do a special study on her favourite Psalm, which is Psalm 119. I am still hoping that this might happen. The idea was that we would spend some time on 119 as it was a very long Psalm.

This is the first time I have done a serious study of the Psalms. Many of the Psalms are happy. But equally many of the Psalms are very sad.

But studying the Psalms is generally quite uplifiting in conparison to some chapters.

This thread was teaming with people until we got to Deuteronmy. Deuteronomy finished most of the others off this thread. Now it is mostly me and hopefully Miss Rowy will also join in the study of Psalm 119.

All comments are very welcome. However short, however long, all comments add spice and flavour to the study.

YESLORDIWILL,

In view of your comment I will go back to Psalm 19.

Hopefully Miss Rowy will continue with Psalm 119 when she is ready to go.

Psalm 19 New International Version (NIV)

1 The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
2 Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they reveal knowledge.
3 They have no speech, they use no words;
no sound is heard from them.
4 Yet their voice goes out into all the earth,
their words to the ends of the world.
In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun.
5 It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber,
like a champion rejoicing to run his course.
6 It rises at one end of the heavens
and makes its circuit to the other;
nothing is deprived of its warmth.
