Psalm 12 New International Version (NIV)

1 Help, Lord, for no one is faithful anymore;
those who are loyal have vanished from the human race.

2 Everyone lies to their neighbor;
they flatter with their lips
but harbor deception in their hearts.

3 May the Lord silence all flattering lips
and every boastful tongue—

4 those who say,
“By our tongues we will prevail;
our own lips will defend us—who is lord over us?”

5 “Because the poor are plundered and the needy groan,
I will now arise,” says the Lord.
“I will protect them from those who malign them.”

6 And the words of the Lord are flawless,
like silver purified in a crucible,
like gold refined seven times.

7 You, Lord, will keep the needy safe
and will protect us forever from the wicked,

8 who freely strut about
when what is vile is honored by the human race

Commentary Psalm 12

People said bad things about David. David thought that everyone was saying bad things. We do not know when that was. Perhaps it was:

1/ when David lived with Saul. After David killed Goliath he went to live with Saul. When Saul was sad, David made music. This made Saul happy again. But some people did not like it. They were not happy that Saul liked David. They said bad things about David.

2/ when David ran away from Saul. He went to live in the woods and fields and mountains. Again, people said bad things about David.

Psalm 13 New International Version (NIV)

1 How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?

2 How long must I wrestle with my thoughts
and day after day have sorrow in my heart?
How long will my enemy triumph over me?

3 Look on me and answer, Lord my God.
Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death,

4 and my enemy will say, “I have overcome him,”
and my foes will rejoice when I fall.

5 But I trust in your unfailing love;
my heart rejoices in your salvation.

6 I will sing the Lord’s praise,
for he has been good to me

David was at one time hiding from King Saul, then later David was hiding from his son Absalom who had led a rebellion against him. It seems that Psalm 13 was written at a time that David was in fear of his enemies.

It is mostly a sad Psalm but there are two nice verses 5 and 6 at the end of Psalm 13.

5 But I trust in your unfailing love;
my heart rejoices in your salvation.

6 I will sing the Lord’s praise,
for he has been good to me

There are a lot of psalms where David is crying out to the Lord. But this shows how faithful he is to God because he never gives up even at his darkest hour

Miss Rowy,

Yes I have discovered that there are sad Psalms as well as happy Psalms.

Commentary for Psalm 13

This psalm is the deserted soul’s case and cure. Whether it was penned upon any particular occasion does not appear, but in general, I. David sadly complains that God had long withdrawn from him and delayed to relieve him.

He earnestly prays to God to consider his case and comfort him. He assures himself of an answer of peace, and therefore concludes the psalm with joy and triumph.

Psalm 14 New International Version (NIV)

1 The fool says in his heart,
“There is no God.”
They are corrupt, their deeds are vile;
there is no one who does good.

2 The Lord looks down from heaven
on all mankind
to see if there are any who understand,
any who seek God.

3 All have turned away, all have become corrupt;
there is no one who does good,
not even one.

4 Do all these evildoers know nothing?

They devour my people as though eating bread;
they never call on the Lord.

5 But there they are, overwhelmed with dread,
for God is present in the company of the righteous.

6 You evildoers frustrate the plans of the poor,
but the Lord is their refuge.

7 Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!
When the Lord restores his people,
let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad!

Commentary Psalm 14

David met a man. His name was Nabal. Nabal was a bad man. Nabal would not give help to David. Soon, Nabal died. Nabal is the Hebrew word for 'fool'. There are 2 groups of fools. One does funny things and makes us laugh. The other does bad things, but he does not feel that he did wrong. We say that he feels no shame. This Psalm is about the second group of fools.
