  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Matthew 8, 5..10

And when Jesus was come into Capernaum, a centurion came to him with a request,
Saying, Lord, my servant is ill in bed at the house, with no power in his body, and in great pain. And he said to him, I will come and make him well. And the centurion in answer said, Lord, I am not good enough for you to come under my roof; but only say the word, and my servant will be made well. Because I myself am a man under authority, having under me fighting men; and I say to this one, Go, and he goes; and to another, Come, and he comes; and to my servant, Do this, and he does it. And when these words came to the ears of Jesus he was surprised, and said to those who came after him, Truly I say to you, I have not seen such great faith, no, not in Israel.

Luke 7, 1..10

After he had come to the end of all his words in the hearing of the people, he went into Capernaum. And a certain captain had a servant who was very dear to him; this servant was ill and near to death. And when news of Jesus came to his ears, he sent to him rulers of the Jews, requesting that he would come and make his servant well. And they, when they came to Jesus, made their request warmly, saying, It is right for you to do this for him, because he is a friend to our nation, and himself has put up a Synagogue for us. And Jesus went with them. And when he was not far from the house, the man sent friends to him, saying, Lord, do not give yourself trouble: for I am not important enough for you to come into my house: And I had the feeling that I was not even good enough to come to you: but say the word only, and my servant will be well. For I, myself, am a man under authority, having men under me; and I say to this one, Go, and he goes; and to another, Come, and he comes; and to my servant, Do this, and he does it. And when these things were said to Jesus, he was surprised, and, turning to the mass of people coming after him, said, I have not seen such great faith, no, not in Israel.
And when those who were sent came back to the house they saw that the servant was well.

Who is not a monk is like the centurion...
He has his heads and he is the head of other persons...
These verses are much important for us...

The centurion practically says that he is not worthy because he is the head of other persons...

Note the differences between the Gospels that are much important because Matthew is a monk ... and Luke is a doctor ...

1)In Matthew the centurion is more worthy

2)In Luke the centurion is less worthy

What is your idea about it?

Note:
The centurion... will have the second Resurrection, practically he will have the same level of the Saints who have a monk life...

This is a great epysode... for me...

Luke Faith is inferior to Matthew Faith in the Gospels...
The centurion of Luke is not worthy more than that of Matthew so also he is not worthy to go to talk with Jesus...
It's very important the dialogue between the centurion and Jesus because Jesus says those Words with reference to centurion words...
It's teaching for me!!!...

The centurion is simply saying that he knows and understands authority, especially Christs.

As for the faith issue, he did have great faith and Christ acknowledged it. The centurion had faith in who Christ is and in His authority.

I'm not sure how you're getting a comparison between Matthew faith and Luke faith.

And I thought Matthew was a tax collector, not a monk.

Matthew didn't write Gospels when he was a tax collector.
He was a monk because of Faith when he wrote his Gospel.
He wrote his Gospel with his Faith!!!
My opinion is that the centurion of the Matthew Gospel has the knowledge... of those who will have the second Resurrection...

The centurion's faith is a pure and simple faith. That is what I think is most important for us to understand. Whether we are a monk or a military leader or a businessman, the basis for a true relationship with Jesus is to simply believe He is the eternal Son of God, and that He will do what He says.

The centurion tells us he believes Jesus has the power and authority because of his statements about his view of his unworthiness. We are all unworthy.

Then, the centurion tells us he trust Jesus by not asking for a sign or asking Jesus to come with him to heal, but simply to say the word and the centurion would know it was done. That is the crux of faith. Taking Jesus at His word.

The differences between the Gospels is a secondary item, I think, as the two tellings are intended for different audiences. Matthew's audience is the Jewish population, while Luke's is likely Theophilus. Matthew wrote from first-hand experience, while Luke wrote from sources he researched in an attempt to write a correct account. (Much of his source fodder was interaction with the apostles, as he was a friend of Paul.) So, while there are differences, and you may be onto something, I tend to look at the different ways of saying things as being based on the immediate audience the authors' intended, and the history of the writers. You too have done this, but I do not see the same strong distinction between the two Gospel accounts.

In Him,
Dave
