There is some irony in the name it was given, considering that in Revelation 9:1-11 a star falls to earth and opens the abyss. The name of the star is not mentioned, however the name of the "King of the Abyss" is called Abaddon in Hebrew and Apollyon in Greek. Meaning "A place of destruction" or "destroyer." This character who is King over the Abyss is mentioned again in Rev. 12 as the dragon and great serpent, the devil who was "thrown down" from heaven and hurled to earth.
Apophis or "Apep" as known in Egyptian mythology was viewed "as the personification of all that was evil, Apep was seen as a giant snake, crocodile, serpent, or in later years, in a few cases, as a dragon..." (from wikipedia)

Friday, April 13, 2029 (what will you be doing in 20 years?) I'll be looking around at the stars to see if I can see it! Superstitious folks will likely be staying home and freaking out (Friday the 13th). It is due to come closer to us than our own communication satellites in orbit around the earth.
SECOND PASS: GOD ORDAINED TIMING or JUST A COINCIDENCE:

On Resurrection (Easter) Sunday, April 13, 2036, (7 years later) a return pass of "Apophis" will occur which will also coincide with Passover week that year-on the 3rd day. (interesting!)
Suggestions on how to celebrate that passover:
"O my people, put on sackcloth and roll in ashes; mourn with bitter wailing as for an only son, for suddenly the destroyer will come upon us." ~Jeremiah 6:26

Astrophysicists claim that "stars don't fall from the sky" yet from our point of view don't we say, "Hey, I see a falling star!" or "There is a shooting star" when we see meteors or comets. Besides, if one wants to get technical, the origin of the word "asteroid" only came to us during the early 19th cent.: from Greek asteroeidēs ‘starlike,’ from astēr meaning ‘star.’ So I don't see the problem between science and the bible.
WILL IT HIT EARTH?

The question is will our gravitational pull draw it in close enough to actually hit us? We don't know that answer yet. But keep an eye on JPL's NASA Near Earth Objects (NEO's) info online <http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/ca/>. New asteroids are discovered each day. As far as Apophis goes, there is enough scientific concern that $50,000 was awarded to whoever could build a devise that would allow us to track this monster Asteroid and make better estimates twenty years from now. They say the best guess right now is 1 in 45,000 chance of it hitting us.

The penalty of sin is death. But what type of death? Could it be we are due to be hit by an asteroid in 2036 because we deserve to be 'stoned!' What a sense of humor. The Holy One who judges all the nations is finally throwing the rocks.
Something to think about. Jesus paid the penalty for our sins, the question is does his blood cover you to protect you from this destroyer? ~Bonnie
